I just thought I would introduce myself to this particular forum as I have never driven a car and bike everywhere. I am sure everyone here has a story and here is mine....My dad worked for the Department of Defense as a School administraitor for the military base schools overseas and I was brought up living on bases in europe for my first 19 years. A lot of the schools there did not have drivers ed., so i didn't get around to learning to drive during high school. I moved to the states a year after graduating and out of pure lazyness I never got around to learning to drive during my early 20's and soon after got into a simple lifestyle revolving around vegetarianism and the Grateful Dead etc.... and decided to not learn to drive. That was 20 years ago. I am now 44 and have never been behind the wheel of a car. I don't mind riding in them though :) I always rode a bike but never really got into bikes besides as a mode of transportation until I was diagnosed with hip arthritis 4 years ago. I was a Basketball and Volleyball player for most of my life and was told to give them up. I took up Road riding then and do close to 110 miles a week for exercise and also got into collecting pre war ballooner bicycles also. Now my basement is cluttered with bikes and tools etc....Hope everybody likes my introduction. Peace, Marc

Welcome, EZ. Mind if I ask a couple questions?

Do you still ride for transportation, or just the road riding for fun?

Has the cycling been good for your hip?

I ride for transportation on a mountain bike with slicks that i built up and with ballooner cruisers also. I road ride for exercise. My understanding is that degredation of the hip is still occuring riding a bike, but it is way less than running etc...I will probably be swimming with a new hip soon ;)

Just be careful not to sink with that new metal hip. :)

Arthritis is horrible. I have it on a small degree but it seems like half my joints are in need of lubricant! I'm looking at alternative medicine since conventional medical treatment revolves around pain management.
