Mountain Biking - Opinions on Specialized Hardrock Comp Disc

Hey y'all. My friends and I are all avid hikers/campers and have recently decided to get into Mountain Biking. I really had my heart set on a full suspension bike, but once i saw the price tag on most of them, i think i'm going to go with a hardtail. Will there be any major disadvantages/advantages of having a hardtail over a full suspension? We went to a local bike shop and i really liked the Specialized Hardrock Comp Disc and was just wondering if anyone has any opinions on it. We will mostly be using them on mountain trails, and knowing how we usually are, will most likely give them some abuse. Any advice you could give will be greatly appreciated.

That is a great, quality, entry level bike. You won't find anything better at that price point. Enjoy

Hmm, the full suspension will be more plush, as in it will aborb bumps in the rear. If you have been riding for not too long or not at all its better to start on a hardtail so you can learn vital mtbing skills. The hardrocks aren't too expensive, once you find whether you like mtbing alot or not and decide what style is your fav, go ahead and get an fs bike later on.

You may want to look at the less expensive Rockhopper which I like more or the slightly more expensive Rockhopper Comp/Comp Disc which I like a LOT more, lol.

Well, in any case the HR Comp is not a bad bike.

What makes them MUCH better?? When you throw out comments like this you should really give us good info to back it up. I'm sure your many years of riding will help the OP in his quest for a bike.The HRcomp is a good bike to start on.

The rival has 8 inch rotors, wider tires, has a bash guard, has 120 mm of travel (opposed to the HR's 100mm), the Rival has a burlier frame in my opinion, and the Rival has an FSA headset(better than the HR's no name headset).

Although, I think the Hardrock Pro Disc is much better.

There is nothing wrong with the HR Comp. The HR is a great bike at that price point. If it fits you go for it.

I see where you're coming from, but are the wider tires and extra travel really a big advantage when you're just starting out? I mean, you might end up gravitating toward the smoother, hardpack trails where the travel would just absorb pedaling energy and the tires slow you down?

Bigger rotors,wider tires and more travel has nothing to do with better its just more.My bike with 6 in front and 7 in back is no better than a rigid SS,it's just what I like. A burlier frame is no advantage or disadvantage to somone just wanting a good trail bike.As far as the headset,just becuse there's no name on it doesn't mean its gonna' fall apart.

I'll stick by my reccomendation. If I was just getting into mountain biking and wanted a bike to sample different types of riding experiences, it fits the bill very nicely.

I was thinking the HR was the perfect bike but I'm now really leaning towards the Rockhopper, in any case, I rode a Hardrock Sport and I liked it but I liked the RH a lot better lol.

Yay, only a 1-2 weeks before my LBS gets the Rockhopper and I get to look at a used Giant bike (can't remember model but it came with BB7s, Deore parts... at 700$) too... damn, the temptation to ride is so big I'm just about to shell the money for a Hardrock Pro... but I MUST resist.
