Foo - What causes an internet troll to become a troll?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

What causes an internet troll to become a troll?

What's up with these people? Do they just enjoy being jerks? Do they laugh to themselves when they knowingly give someone bad information?

What causes this anti-social behaviour? Is being a troll the only way they can get attention? It's really a sad lot of people that feel the need to cause agravation to others....

How sad and empty their lives must be.....

No, really, this is a serious question.

BTW, I post more in bike forums than P&R.....

Hmm, i guess the 'troll' is just like the 'bully'. Have personal issues, had a bad day etc. That I can understand.

But if someone were just naturally a 'bully' or 'troll' for no particular reason, I just cannot understand that. Why would anyone be mean without a reason...just for the fun of it? Yes it is sad if they are trolling with no reason...

We all have our bad days, but I've noticed some folks on this board often give filppant answers to serious questions, and also post foolish post knowingly in the wrong forum, etc.

a troll is someone that doesn't have any control in thier life, usually someone who is always overpowered but everyone else.Just as a bully in real life, the only way to achieve power on thier own is to attack easy targets. A bully will never go for someone who knows would fight back, imagine how easy it is to have this kind of behaviors online. It is the perfect place to blow steam for them and sadly making someone's life miserable is usually the only way they feel they have now achieve some kind of power over someone else. they are anonymous and noone can really get to them or confront them in real life, it's a coward thing to do to troll someone just like bullying someone.Trolls and bullies are actually cowards and you should only feel bad for them and not let them get to you as it is the one thing they wanted to achieve to begin with. They usually have very low self esteem, think about it, what kind of individual gets online and harass poeple in order to feel powerful, what a sad sad life they most have.

The human psyche can be a varied and complicated thing... sometimes. Other times the motivations can be pretty simple. I think a lot of Internet trolls are simply bored. Perhaps going for a bike ride might help them out. ;)

normal person + anonymity + audience = F**kwad.

That pretty much sums it up.....go play some Battlefield2 to see how common these tools are....or go play on battle.net......B-net is pretty much the sphincter of the internet.

I think that a lot of times it's just bored people who get a kick out of watching a massive overreaction to whatever nonsense they toss out there.

Sometimes it's people who are truly cracked who feel the world is out to get them so they need to get the world first.

And all shades in between.

When I troll (more or less never on this forum, frequently on others) it's not mean-spirited. It's always so blantantly stupid that only the dumbest of forumites fall for it. And usually the same ones, over and over. Which makes me wonder more ane more, is it actually them who are trolling me?

The forums would be more boring without them.

I can't stand that stuff. Ever since I had a bad encounter as a kid with the residue left on the controls of a video arcade game, I get nauseous at the sight of it.
