General Cycling Discussion - which hybrid/sport city bike for under £350?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hi all,

Hope everybody is well.

There may have been a better sub-forum to publish this thread, but I wasn't sure, so sorry about that.

I would just like to ask if anyone has any advice. I want to buy a hybrid or sport city (sorry, I find they are called different names in different shops) for under £300. Any suggestions?

The Dawes Discovery 201 and 301 look good, but I don't really know what I'm talking about.

Thanks!

Gav

Dawes make a nice hybrid bike, esp with ridgid forks for simplicty.
You need to budget for rack, mudguards, repair kit, helmet, lights etc.
Tyres are one area for a quick and easy upgarde at the shop. If the stock tyres are kevlar banded then they are OK, otherwise switch them.
The wheel-build of any entry-level bike can be suspect so a good bike shop will check this. Are you buying from a proper bike shop?

Thanks so much for your help Michael.

Yeah, I'll keep the extras in mind.

I was planning to buy from a proper bike shop, yes.

What is the advantage of kevlar branded tyres?

I'm looking for a good bike for my money, but I'm not really sure what constitutes a good bike. I know I want a light weight one, but not sure what else. I don't need a huge amount of gears and I'm not sure about suspension.
