Have anyone seen or tried before carrying a bike with a motorcycle? I have a friend who own a motorcycle asking me for advice. The answer he recieved will determined what bicycle he is going to buy for this Christmas.
He own a 200 cc motorbike for commuting daily. Now he want to get a mountain or road bike for sport. However, it is impossible for him to cycle 30 mile all the way to the starting point to join me. A folding bike may be the solution but not what Im looking for
I was wondering whether it can be done by hanging the 2 wheels on one side and the main frame on the other? any advise will be appreciated
Frazer, are you kidding me? You are from Singapore, man. Take a trip across the bridge to Malaysia and you will find people carrying motorcycles with bicycles not to mention bicycles on motorcycles.
Of course it can be done. I would have a bicycle rack put on the motorcycle, though. I have not seen a bicycle rack for motorcycles, but I am sure there are shops in Singapore and Malaysia that has some dude with a torch, a welding rod, and enough creativity to put something together for less than US$10.00

Have him make some kind of backpack carrying system, then he can carry the bike on his back with the wheels either on or off. I've seen it on adventure races and stuff like that.
200cc that kind of small.. do you think a trailer would work on that ? or a side car.
Strange you should ask, I was just sent the following link recently:

I remember a story by Greg Herbold where he fabricated some bike mounts for a motorcycle trek.
http://www.teamexplorer.de/html/advent/mexico.html
Wonderly's description of the area sounded like there was good MTB riding, but there were lots of long rough roads you had to take to get there. Then it came to me....... put the bicycles on the motorcycles! This idea seemed cool at first, but got worst after I started visualize it a little. Heck, I can't even get stickers to stay on my motocross bike, let alone a bicycle! Then, after more thought, the concept started to make more sense. Starting from the beach camp, Explorers would ride the motos across the flat desert to the singletrack in the mountains, take off the bikes, ride the singletrack, re-mount the MTBs , then return to camp by moto in the evening. Sounds so bizarre it just might be a great idea!
Fabrication of the bike mounts for the motos began immediately. I love to fabricate things, and luckily I'm the kind of person that never throws anything away, so there is lots of stuff(junk) laying around to make things out of. A old Yakima car rack was the first sacrifice, followed by some strap steel. After bending, drilling, welding, hose clamping, re-bending, slotting, making spacers, finding proper nuts and bolts, refitting, aligning and a little flat black spray paint the first bike mount was finished and installed on my wife's motorcycle. Fabrication is a great way to be creative... but it sure does make a mess.
Nervously, I put the bike on the rack, strapped down the wheels and rode off on the ranch for the first time....... carrying a bike on a motorcycle. To my surprise...it worked!!!! Sure it was super sketchy, and made the moto handle real weird, but I did the whole ranch loop without the bike falling off. Rolling into the shop and stepping back to look at the creation I had just invented gave me an ear to ear grin... even if the whole idea was a bit stupid, I was psyched! A quick call to the nice people at Yakima (and alot of B.S.ing on my part) and I had all of the racks and parts on the way. A few trips to the friendly good ole boy hardware store and some long nights in the shop ...and waa laaa the bike mounts for the Motos were complete.
He poo poos the performance (uh, I imagine Herbold wasn't content to tool smoothly down the trail) but they looked much better than those in the previous link.
Back when I had my 83 Honda CM450 streetbike, I used to remove the front wheel from my ATB, lay the bike over the back seat horizontally, then place the front wheel on top of it. The whole bike was held onto the motorbike with many bungee cords on the rear seat. It can be done but you need to be careful when you slow down or accelerate so it doesn't jolt the bike too much.
I've seen a Honda VFR 750 carrying a mountainbike. Both wheels were off the mtb and mounted either side of the frame, and the frame was on a carrier behind the rider.

dwon her i see side mount surfboard racks they clamp on to the top tib and hol you board out far enough that you can pedal and steer. I can imagine the same thing on a motorcycle the would hol the bike high enough so you could turn.

I know a guy who tows a trailer with his racing motorcycle to the race track with his street motorcycle. In other words, a motorcycle towing a motorcycle trailer.
Weld or bolt a towing hitch onto the motorcycle and build a trailer to hold the bicycle.

My brother mounted a Yakima rack to the back of his Honda 450 Nighthawk. From what I remember, he used off-the-shelf parts from Yakima, and had it set up so that he could carry his bicycle and a set of spare wheels (3 wheel forks). The only modification to the Yakima parts he had to make was cutting down one of their round load bars. He used to cause crashes from people gawking at him when he'd show up at bike races. I'll have to ask him if he's got a pic of it. I do remember that the bicycle was in-line behind him when he rode the motorcycle, just like it would be on a roof rack.

There are other bicycle on a motorcycle racks made as well. I have seen motorcycles used as sag vehicles on charity rides, carrying cyclists and the bicycle.

Oh wow! I just saw this yesterday on my drive home. The motorcycle was going the opposite direction on a highway so I didn't have much time to check it out, unfortunately. There was a bicycle "floating" right behind where the guy was sitting on the motorcycle with the back half of the bike sticking out past the rear wheel of the motorcycle, probably on a rail of some sort, like those front-wheel-on roof racks. To see that, then see this thread afterwards, weird.

Dooley what the hell's wrong with you? This thread is from 2002
The original poster is LONG gone. What's the point of bringing back an ANCIENT thread when the only thing you added is a ONE WORD ANSWER?
Blasted newbies
The only thing I added was a one word answer, I guess you can't see the pic, huh?
Sorry for searching to see whether the topic had been covered, I won't make the same mistake again.
