Foo - I think they should change BF back to the way it was.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I don't find it any easier to post stuff. It was fine before.

The stuff barely works on my home computer.

Why, Bike Forums? Why?

That's ok... we won't hold it against you. Too much.

New Jersey is like 'The Bog of Eternal Stench' in Labrynth, once you live there it never leaves you. From where do you think I got my acrebic attitude. ;)

Well I live in the Delaware Valley in Ewing (Trenton area), the Delaware River itself is only a mile and a half from my door. The surrounding area of Trenton, however, is a sh**hole, with all of the gang wars and shootings and such. It has gotten so bad that my girlfriend has asked me not to ride my bike to work anymore. I work in Trenton and ride thourgh some dicey areas. But at least I have a couple of bikes and actually ride them..I have even posted pics of them;) :D .

Cheers,

Brian

Yeah, but it's STILL Jersey :p I've been out of Burlington County for about 7 years now and I still get the flashbacks. You couldn't pay me enough to live there again!

As a server administrator that is one of the worst things to ask. You have no idea about the problems or the complexity of the project but still offer advice. You would be good in upper management.

What I think the op is trying to get at is "if it ain't broke then don't fix it."

Although, the server certaintly seems like it needs fixing now.:(

Is it just me, or do the complaints most often come from posters without red stars? I recall from my time in retail that the most difficult and time consuming product sold was the stuff we gave a way for free.

I always thought that a company/store/whatever gave away stuff for free as trial to show how good a product is. If the product is good and the consumer likes it, then the customer wants (hypothetically) to buy it...but if the product is no good or doesn't work when it is free, well, you can hardly expect a person to spend money on it then. That is what everyone I know that worked in retail/owned a business told me anyway. Maybe things have changed.

I don't seem to understand what's going on here. At first, all went well on Bikeforums and I had no complaints. Recently, there was a change which brought on lengthy waits before getting to Bikeforums,
posting problems, difficulty in accessing entire boards, and even getting the ever-repetitious, "We can't find this page" and other problems.

Everything went so well before. Why, Bikeforums? Why?

Yeah, I really don't read BF anymore, a majority of the pages don't load, and I made a bunch of posts that never god added. I just check back occasionally to see if their any updates on an alleycat this weekend.

...adn I thought about upgrading, but glad i didn't spend $25 for a slow server that takes forever; a wet dream for sure

It was broke actually. There were problems and speed issues that this upgrade will fix.

I'm a pretty hard core BF member. But this is getting pretty old. It's going on weeks now! It'll be interesting to see if this has any effect of forum members, in terms of numbers. I can't imagine that everyone is as patient and desperate for a life as me.

IF it is like the last time the numbers wont even get affected. Forum'ers have short memories. Once this thing is full swing, in a month people will only be praising joe for putting all the money and the last 3 weeks of his time into a worthy upgrade. Just in man hours alone (not including contractors) I would bet he has put in 80 hour weeks to get this place up and running. Plus server costs, redbull costs and loss of time with the family. All for something that costs him a fortune per month to keep up and running with little or no fiscal return.

Well we have all had the same issues and problems lately. I, for one, am willing to be patient and wait it out. When the server is working properly it gives me a failry good idea of how good it is goingto be when all of the bugs are worked out.....so....no complaints here. if I have to post the same thing more than once to get it on the boards, so be it. There are alot of worse things I have to deal with everyday.

Cheers,

Brian

I take it everything you have done in your life has gone perfect? When I made the move and upgrade, I was not expecting this type of issue to come up, **** happens, I'm dealing with it.

The old server was dead, it was on its last legs, partitions were full, hard drives were failing, the webhost service sucked. The old server was not fine in any way, it may have worked OK, but I needed to get off that box, and the sooner the better. The server move was not an option, the upgrade was not an option. The old software was not secure, the new software is.

I'm sorry you are having soo many issues with the site...

I don't get it. Joe is trying VERY hard to make things better for US - all of us, paying or not, registered or not. He is supposed to be "retired" from BF which is why Mael stepped in. NOBODY with a blue star is using their mod status as their source of income. They volunteer. Yes, there are problems. There are always problems whenever there is a change. I'm surprised that they are still allowing us access as this changeover is happening. We are very lucky it wasn't shut down for a few days straight.

Please accept that this switch over is taking time. How many hours of sleep is Joe losing for us, to make us happy? I see that there are more complaints than thank yous to him. People make moves for the better. It is not anyone's intention to make BF inconvenient.

Some people on here seem to want things, NOW - and instead of being patient, they are not grateful at all. Let's see THEM try to get this going and please the number of people that are using BF WHILE he is trying to make it perfect.

Give the guy a break, please. He is only trying to make things better for us all.

And Joe, as I said to you before, I think you are doing a great job and I thank you for all that you have accomplished for the sake of keeping BF alive. And for the mods, thank you for the patience you have had while people like me PM'd you asking questions. I appreciate it very much.

Well said, and while joe was on vacation he was far from retired. As you can see he is back :)...I just stepped in for a short time :) I will still do the job as long as joe needs me.

Oh and by the way, what she said ;) :D..

I will never be able to understand the whiners and criers of this world especially when what they are complaining about is an essentially free service. 99% of the work involved is voluntary and most of the uptime costs are out of pocket. People that complain without having the remotest comprehension of why (and btw LOTS of people were whining 3 months ago when the old server started to slow down...this replacement was a long term coming), how, and what is involved. I deal with managers and execs all the time who don't have the slightest comprehension of what is involved in managing a single server, let alone performing upgrades, security patches, hardware repairs etc.

BTW Joe, you handled that better than I would have. Your patience isn't that thin yet ;) :D..

Well said! Doing a software upgrade and a hardware upgrade in one sweeping move means that there are a LOT of different (big and little) things that can go wrong. Some aren't apparent from the get go and thus Joe couldn't have foreseen the problems we have been encountering these last few weeks. There is just no real way he could have simulated the typical server loads that BF's gets before going live with the new hardware and software. And because of that - there are a series of growing pains for a while. One fix may break something else, and so on. I applaud Joe for his commitment to making BF's the best cycling forum on the net for as Maelstorm said - little or no fiscal return. I'm already a red star and I will probably send some more $ Joe's way soon to help with all the costs over the last month.
