Hello, I just bought a newer looking Schwinn World for $25. It's in great condition, just needs new tires and a tune up. Great buy. The serial number is G0859428 or GC859428. Can anyone tell me what year this was made? It is equipped with a suntour x-2000 r derail and Chang star deluxe (?) side pull brakes. It is a 10 speed. horizontal drop outs. Also, I dont know much about the suntour line. how does that derailleur rank? What about the brakes?
Thanks in advance
well biked

I'm gonna guess it's an '88 model, built by Giant for Schwinn. Based on the "G" in the serial # and I believe the third digit is the last digit of the year. If there are four small numbers stamped on the headbadge, that's the date code. First three digits are the numerical day of the year, the fourth digit is the last number in the year. Example: 1868 would indicate the bike was assembled on the 186th day of 1988.
I have one with exactly the same paint scheme as yours and it is definitely an 88 model. Check the 4 digit number on the head badge. the last number indicates the year. Your bike is definitely from the eighties. My son in law rode mine all last summer and had no problems. They are decent riders but nothing special. I have 3 of them, all picked up for 10 bucks or less.
That's the bike that's in the '88 catalog. Neither '87 or '89 have that paint scheme so it must be an '88.
