Well, if he had a taste for them, fine. It makes a good story, but not really that impressive. To survive four days, it was probably unnessessary to eat anything.

In actual survival conditions, food is the least important thing to worry about. The "rule of threes" in survival is:

Three minutes without air.
Three hours without shelter.
Three days without water.
Three weeks without food.

But hey, if you can lick a toad, why not?

The story is a little inconsistent. If the water was too cold to swim, then it was probably too cold for frogs to come out of hibernation. Just something to consider.
