Which brakes offer better stopping power? I'm considering the Magura Hydraulic HS33 rim brakes or going with a set of hydraulic discs. I need excellent stopping power, because I'm "trying" to learn trials moves. ;) I am a weight weenie so the rim brakes are looking better to me as is the price. Anyone had experience with hydro rim brakes over disc? Thanks a lot!
Hydraulic rim brakes.... haven't heard much from those in a while. While they might offer good stopping power, they're still rim brakes. If you ride more than just trials, those brakes will EAT a rim in wet or muddy conditions. But if you're just riding trials, I can't see that you'll get but so much more of an advantage out of discs. The single biggest advantage of discs is that they're practically impervious to mud and water. So if you only ride on the street or in the dry, those brakes are cheap and pretty powerful. But if you're a trail rider, I'd say go with discs.

Thanks, Yea, this bike is just for trials, no wet conditions. I'd never put rim brakes on anything other than a trials bike used in dry conditions.
I'd say the rim brakes will be fine, then. Lots of trials riders use v-brakes... so I'd say the hydraulics will be fine.
