Bicycle Mechanics - Off-bar computer mount options (long)

So I recently received a Polar S-150 HRM as a present to replace my Sigma cyclocomputer. While I like the increased training potential it offers, and the versatility of using the same HRM for running and cycling, I've found the mounting bracket to be overly cumbersome:

What I liked most about the Sigma was the ability to mount the computer on the stem, completely freeing the bars of clutter and allowing for a narrow hand position (which I used frequently). Unfortunately, the Polar takes up too much room even when mounted as close to the stem as possible to make use of this narrow hand position. Very frustrating.

Ideally, I'd like to move the HRM mount off the bars to a position in front of the stem, like Shimano Flight Deck:

With this in mind, I've come up with several options, although each has its drawbacks:


Minoura Space Grip SG-2:

PROS: Adjustable band clamp allows for mounting to 26.0mm bulge section. Cheap.
CONS: Looks slightly wide at the handlebar end. Comes out further than I'd like. Dual-sided mount (looking for single-sided mount).


Minoura Swing Grip:

PROS: Can mount to underside of stem, rotate to put HRM right in front of stem faceplate. Cheap.
CONS: Clunky/dorky (aesthetics matter). Dual sided mount (see above).


Deda Space Cockpit:

PROS: Narrow mounting bracket. Short extension. Sleek. Appears to have single-sided mounting options (CF tube appears to slide in mounting bracket, fixed in place by single bolt).
CONS: Overly expensive for what it is. 24.0mm handlebar mount (although bracket may expand to allow for 26.0mm mounting). Hard to find.


Profile aerobar computer mount on Minoura Besso:

PROS: Short extension. Single-sided mounting. I already have the Profile mount. Cheap.
CONS: Kludge. Slightly wide Minoura mount at handlebar end (see Space Grip).


That's what I've found thus far. I'm wondering what you think of the options above, if you've encountered a similar dilemma, and/or if you have other suggestions that I'm missing.

You should also take into consideration, the inevitable crash & the cost of replacing the stuff with it all being extended forward &/or higher.

I've been looking for an off-bar mount for a long time. I've even gone so far as to look for a piece of aluminum bar stock that I could hacksaw/dremel and make a DIY project out of it, similar to what was done in the above thread. That Deda one looks pretty nice, but you're certainly not kidding when you say it's overpriced.

The Atomic Mount (from the post BryE linked to) looks like it would enable you to stick the Polar HRM on the stem right where you liked your Sigma to be: http://www.atomicmount.com/

Here's how I mount my watch-type HRM:

SB - thanks for the suggestion. The Vetta could be a good alternative if I can find it.

supcom - I'd leave it on my wrist, but the S150 doubles as a cyclocomputer. The chunky mount is connected to the speed sensor, and the watch needs to be on the mount to gather biking info.

I think I've hit on a good possibility. I've tracked down just the mounting clamp for the Shimano Flight Deck system shown above in a 26.0mm diameter from Cambria:

I'm going to try screwing the Profile computer mount that I already have into the nut in the Flight Deck clamp:

Hopefully this will put the mount far out enough to let the HRM clear the faceplate.

And if it doesn't work, I'm only out five bucks :)

Looking further, I see this part is in the QBP catalog, so you should be able to get it just about anywhere, even your LBS. I'll be ordering one myself in the next week or so.

Huh! I had completely overlooked it in the QBP catalogs that I checked. It's a good thing they stock them, because I was going to be unhappy paying $7 shipping on a $4.80 order from Cambria ;)
