View Full Version : Does your bike have a name?

I'm in the LBS and the youthful girl who is works there is helping me find some new "stuff" and she wants to know if it has to match in color to which I reply that "of course it does, and I don't ride with people who don't name their bikes". This of course gives her a chuckle or two and she asks me the name of my touring bike and I tell her. She sort of ho-hums and looks at me as if I am a bubble off-center and we go along to another topic. A few minutes later I ask her if her bike has a name and she promptly responds "Eddy".

So my question is, does your bike have name?

No, have a hard enough time remembering the names of people I meet. I don't think I could accomodate additional names for my bikes. But.... If I did, I'd probably struggle with deceiding if it was going to be a male or female name.

Hmmmm, I wonder which name gave her pause...

Anyway, I shouldn't talk.
Trek 520; "the Bronze" after it's colour and in honour of my favourite TV show.
Raleigh Century: "Rubeus" because it's twice as heavy as a normal bike.

My current ride ('03 Cannondale R600) is "Lucille". This came from the movie "Cool Hand Luke" where George Kennedy, upon seeing a sultry woman began chanting "Lucille, Lucille,...". When someone inquired how he knew what her name was, he replied, "anything that looks that good's just got to be named Lucille".

Building up a Look frame currently which I'm thinking of naming "Lady" so that that I can her "Lady Look"!

Several bikes in the shed- none have names but all my friends know what I am on about when I ask the to come out on the "Beast". Twice the weight of the other bikes- Doesn't handle- Brakes don't work and the ride is diabolical. The answer is always "NO" for some reason. I even offer to let them steer but the answer is always "NO" as they run in the other direction.

We've dubbed our new tandem "Valentine" for the following reasons:

1) It's a bicycle built for two
2) It's bright red, with matching red bottle cages
3) After working with the LBS for weeks, we finally came to agreement on price and options on 2/14.

Naturally, we had to go buy matching red helmets and gloves. The wife also wanted shoes, but I had to draw the line there since we both have a perfectly good pair and the ones she found were pricey!

The matching stuff does not stop there. We get plenty of comments from other riders that do not know us, about our Matching colours- With the aid of some sponsorship- we have matching shorts with the name of the shop- and matching socks from the same. Helmets- We both have the same make and similar models- but Stuarts is red and mine is silver. I bought a matching Medium and Large s/s top last year and also later a matching pair of "Roubaix" L/S tops. Then Stuart bought the Waterproof tops but I often revert back to my Goretex that is the same colour- Pertex we have the same tops but mine is purple and Stuarts is Yellow. Now shoes- I like one type- preferably old and worn in and Stuart likes a different type, so we will never be wearing the same shoes- Same with gloves and glasses.

Now that is the problem as instead of only having the wallet large enough for a new cycling top or helmet- it has to be twice as thick to get matching pairs.

Going back to Bike names-Will have to think of a better name for the Tandem- It is Hard- Likes to be treated rough-Likes to play dirty- and costs a fortune to keep running-Any Suggestions?

I refer to them all by model name, Everest, Super Comp etc. but when I am riding any one of them its designation automatically becomes Ground Force One.

None of my bikes have names unless you consider "my little bike" a name, or "my big bike" a name. :)

Many of you already have read posts about the French woman in my life: "Mimi." She is eighteen years younger than I, but she is oh so comfortable and eager to please. She's compliant, long-legged and doesn't mind a long ride. She's was born in France in 1968 at the Peugeot bicycle works as a U08.

I love her and she makes my wife only a little bit jealous. Lately, though, Mimi has been acting like the typical female and insisting that I spend a little more money on her. I will, but that's for a different post.

My bikes earn their names.....

My Airborne..... after my third crash with her I was checking her over for damage(and there was none, again.)..... maybe it was the wind.... but I thought I heard, "You can call me Chistine". So I do.

My Bianchi? Well she is Italian, and it seems that she gets what ever she wants, so I call her Lola. Because whatever Lola wants, Lola gets.

My new 'bent? Hasn't earned it's name yet.......

My black Trek OCR is called Vlad the Impaler because I have been known to fall off when I have a seniors' moment and attempt to put the wrong foot down and end up on my side looking ridiculous. My wife rides a Gitane called "Gertie" - what else.

As I've collected bikes I started naming them so that I could remember them. My first and primary ride is My Bike. I also acquired My Other Bike, and then The Other Bike. Most recently I added Which Bike, and for the heck of it, Your Bike. Conversations about them tend to be interesting.

Wife: "Have a nice ride, honey. Are you riding your bike?"
Me: "No. I'm riding My Bike."

Wife, slightly confused: "That's what I said, your bike."
Me: "No, not Your Bike, My Bike."

Wife, now really confused: "I really didn't expect you to ride my bike. What's wrong with your bike?"
Me: "Nothing's wrong with Your Bike, I just don't feel like riding it today. But if you didn't didn't expect me to ride My Bike, what bike did you expect me to ride?"

Wife, passing from confused to whatever it is that wives go through before they really get ticked off: "Not what bike, which bike. Which bike are you going to ride?"
Me: "No, not Which Bike, My Bike. I'm riding My Bike."

Wife, now really ticked off: "Look d*mmit, I don't care which bike you ride! You've got a whole d*mned garage full of bikes and you don't know what d*mn bike you're going to ride?"
Me: "I don't have a D*mn Bike."

Well, that's not entirely true, since I'm living out here in the garage now I have acquired two new roommates. I'm thinking of calling them What Bike, and D*amn Bike.

No, no, no...not What Bike, My Bike..I'm riding My Bike!

I'm starting to get into this naming thing. I named another one of my bikes this weekend It's For Sale. I thought I'd take it out for a quick ride this morning (before I actually sell it) when my neighbor saw me and said, "Nice bike."

I said, "Thank you. It's For Sale."
Neighbor, starting to look confused: "Er, uh, thanks. I'll keep that in mind."

Me: "Well, you certainly can't do better than a vintage steel, British, lightweight bicycle. It's For Sale is a..."
Neighbor, now moving from confused to slightly annoyed: " Er, uh, yes. You've mentioned that."

Me: "...worth...mentioned what?"
Neighbor, now beginning to look trapped with eyes darting side to side as if to escape: "That it's for sale. If I ever have the desire to own a bicycle, you'll certainly be the first person I'll call."

Neighbor: running back to his garage, "Have a nice bike...uh, day! Have a nice daaayyy!" he yelled back over his shoulder.
Me: "No, this one isn't Nice Day, It's For Sale! I don't have a Nice Day ye..."

Neighbor: "AAAaarrrrgghhhh!"

Now that he mentioned it, I wonder if he wants to buy a bike. I got one named It's Not For Sale, about his size that I suppose I could part with. I think I'll go ask.

i actually named one of my bikes "Ave Maria" in honor of a character in the novel "Big Stone Gap.". I wrote to the author telling her, and she was really pleased.
