I'm redoing my rain bike, and I've decided to go with some 7-speed command shifters. I'm definately going to keep them on friction most of the time, but because they are indexed on the right, they dont have the sweet ratchet mechanisms that other suntour friction shifters have. This makes me wonder (mostly out of idle curiousity) whether there is some cassette/derailler combination that can make this work indexed. I have a shimano freehub and cassette, and I need 135mm spacing hubs to fit the (al) bike.

I think if you use a SunTour rear derailler designed for their 7-speed indexing, you'll be okay. 7-speed cassette/freewheel sprocket spacing wasn't much meaningfully different bewteen Shimano and Suntour. (The smaller cogs were slightly narrower spaced - 4.8mm - on Suntour 7-speed freewheels. But the larger cogs wer 5.0mm apart, and Shimano 7-speed freewheels and cassettes have the 5.0mm spacing. So, with a bit of fiddling for adjustment, you'll probably be okay.
they generally shift better with a shimano cogs than they ever did with suntour cogs. some of us do work, ya know... patience

Cool! I picked up a set of Suntour, 7 speed, index shifters for cheap and I'm just waiting to find a bike from my garage saleing adventures to add them to. I thought I would have to find a Suntour cassette to make the combo work. Shimano cassettes are Sooooo much easier to find. Thanks genericbikedude for opening this thread.
i'm using an all SunTour drivetrain except for cassette on my mountain bike - X-1 derailers and shifters with a SRAM PG-730 cassette. it really does shift better (indexed) with the SRAM cassette than it ever did with SunTour.

Probably the main reason for better shifting is ramps and shaped teeth in the cogs - they really do help with shifting, and I don't think most of the early Suntour indexed 7-speed stuff had them. So this (and the slight float in top rear derailler pully) should more than make up for any slighty difference in cog spacing.

Actually, I've heard that first generation accushift was shaped and ramped, but it was all oriented the wrong way. D'oh.
