Alt Bike Culture - Where to start....

I am starting a welding class next Wednesday and as luck would have it, this weekend is spring cleanup in my neighborhood. That means super scavenge Saturday and Sunday!! What types of frames should I be looking for? Does it matter what kind of metal they're made of? Will I be ok with one chromoly frame and one steel frame? Obviously I'm going for simplicity for my first attempt at this sort of thing, so I'm going to try to find 2 bikes with similar head tubes and an elongated steer tube. Something like this:

My primary project for the class will be a honda based scooter chopper, and I'm doing this to learn some basic technique so I'm hoping it will be fairly quick and easy. Any tip or ideas to make it go smoothly?

I'm thinking too much is better than too little...if you need more frame halfway through assembly, you'd be glad if you grabbed an extra or two.

Part out what you don't use, utilize as much as possible, discard as little as possible.

Don't be afraid to make mistakes. Work as safely and as organized :rolleyes: as the construction process allows.

And please share some pics with us! If you can't grab some pics while building, let us see the completed bike.

I think chromemoly is a steel. I think welding it to mild carbon steel is no problem. Aluminum and stainless are the ones that need special goodies.

Yeah, that's a good call. I'll probably just grab as many bikes as I can. I can always use them later or recycle them. Who knows, maybe someone else in the class will want to build one too! Thanks for the tips, I will be bringing a camera to class to document my projects. I'll throw a couple of pictures up as soon as I get started.
