Well, I had a class in Orange County last week. I live in Corona. Connecting the two is Highway 91, one of the most congested highways in the USA.
Rain was predicted...so no way I'm driving. The 30 mile drive back home would easily take two hours.
So I think to myself...what if I take the Metrolink train?
The train station is about two miles from my house in Corona, and has a stop less than a mile from where the class is being held in Irvine.
The folder was perfect! I was loaded down pretty well, since I had to carry raingear in addition to my work clothes. The second day I moved my clipless pedals from my MTB to the folder, since the stock pedals were just to slippery in the rain.
I took the 6:01. I was also happy to see that the train was almost full. There are obviously lots of people opting to leave their cars at home in So Cal.
I got a few second glances, but no one asked me about my wonderful folder. Oh well...I wish I could ride the train every day to work, but my work schedule won't allow it.
My total commute for those days was about 60 miles on the train and 8 miles in the bike.
Bicycle commuting is nothing new to me. I've been doing it off and on all my adult life. The intent of this post is just to say that I was impressed at the additional flexibility with alternate transportation the folder gives me. I mean, I love my MTB too, but it's hard to get it into an elevator and park it in a fancy office building.
I tried to be a good ambassador for folders. Who knows? Maybe someone will see one at their LBS and say "So THAT'S what that guy was riding!"
In the meantime, I'll keep carpooling and wait for a train that leaves Corona at 3:00AM.
