Recumbent - Should I buy

Guys & Gals:
There is a Lightning P-38 at the local bike shop...used. Looks like new, cept there are add ons where the ?floppy chain? has hit the frame, to keep the said floppy chain from marking the frame. From those who have this bike, what are the pros and cons. From what I have seen these bikes get good reviews about speed, etc. So wanted some personal experience. For some background,,, I have a Linear and have dabbled in homebuilt. Peace, El Padre

I had a P-38 about 8-9 years ago and I loved it! it was the recumbent I had always thought was the best design. The only problem I had with it, was that the stem would never tighten enough to hold the forks firmly. So if I made a sudden turn, the stem & bars would turn but the front wheel would keep going straight. I'm sure by now they have fixed whatever was wrong with it. I sold it before I had it fixed. It's possible that I may re-own it soon, as they buyer still has it and doesn't need it much any more. (and he had the steering fixed)
I would say "Go For It!" I'm sure the chain sagging problem can be easily remedied. Plus it gives you a bargaining chip..."Take $300 less because there's something funky about this chain"

As you indicated you are a tinkerer, then a P38 would be the other end of the spectrum from your Linear, and you can fix the chain problem yourself (or with help from the Forum members, myself included) I liked the P38 over the Tour Easy because of the shorter wheelbase. That being a personal preference. They are both great bents but the P38 just seemed to me to be more "Racy". Granted, the Easy Racer holds the record for speed and now resides in the Smithsonian, so it is a FAST bike. I just like the twitchy feel of the P38 vs the Chopper feel of the Easy Racer.

If you can get a used P38, then I would do it. Used is the best way to try recumbents as they retain more value for a second hand buyer. I got a used Greenspeed last year for $2000. Even on a bad day I could probably get $3000 for it. It has enough options that it would run a bit over $7000 new. (plus I'd have to wait a while for them to build it.)

Thanks Doc: If it is still in the LBS next week it will be mine. I told the guy today my test to see if I am really supposed to have it is that it will be there when I come back.
The chain thing was that the previous owner had put rubber tubing over some of the frame to protect it which looks 'not good' so I will have to live with it or maybe add a chain guide which can look better. I love my Linear which is a long wheel base but thought this would be nice too. I have a "look alike" that I made that is much like the P-38 but it does not have the enginering : ) , of course, of a manufactured bike. I know that can be a good thing to but in my case it was not on the good side. Mine is not that bad but would not work for a long ride.

One thing that I've heard over and over about the P-38, is that it is a fantastic climber. As good as a DF, even. On flat ground it's about average.

I have a P-38 and like it. Not the easiest to break down and transport
(I can throw my Rocket in the trunk of my Accord) but very nice.

if you don't buy this, let me know and I will buy it! Find out the fram size though - I need a medium :)

The update is that I paid for it today and will bring in home on Thursday...I would have ridden it home today but have too tight a schedule to do that.
