We are looking to buy a new tandem. We ride 30 to 50 miles weekly. We are looking at carbon, titantium, aluminium or something else. We are looking at higher end tandems since our old one was expensive for the time but lasted nearly 20 years. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appricated.

Thanks

Need lots more information e.g., your budget, road or mountain, what type of riding do you intend; tour, race, rails to trails, etc. Does a coupled frame matter? And so on...

Suggest you search the forums (top of page). This has been discussed at length.

Cost is no object...

Titanium - Seven Cycles Axiom 007 Ti
Aluminum - Custom Co-Motion Roadster
Carbon - Calfee Tetra Tetra
Something Else - Santana Beyond or Team Niobium or Scandium

Now, let's get serious...

What's your budget?
What's your combined team weight?
What's your combined team age?
Do you ride for fun, fitness, sport, or competition?
Do you plan to do any loaded touring?
Do you plan to travel?
What's the largest size tire you plan to use?
Will you need to run mud-guards?
Do you spend a lot of time cleaning or tweaking your bikes or do you tend to things when something goes wrong?

Have a look at www.angletechcycles.com and look at a Harmony semi-recumbent tandem. The wife and I have been using the Counterpoint varient for nearly 20 tears. They also sell several fully recumbent tandems.

Thanks for your input and questions . My wife and I are in our 50's we ride for fitness and light weight touring (hotel to hotel she'll ride but camping is out). Our combined weight is 320 lbs. We confine our riding to roads and paved trails so we are looking for a road bike. We are not worried about cost since we plan to use the bike for years and want the best we can get. We only travel locally with the tandem and really don't plan to take it on plane trips with us so we are not really interested in S&S bikes. I keep my bikes in good shape but I don't spend hours tinkering with them.

My wife and I are in a similar situation as you are, although I would like to have an option for travel and possibly some lighter touring with it in the future. We were looking at a Co-Motion Speedster (http://www.co-motion.com/speedst.html). Both of us have done at lot of riding on singles, but this would be my first tandem bike so I don't have a lot of experience other than what I have read and asking the opinion of others.

I would definitely include the Seven Axiom 007 in Ti in your short list. They offer 12 stock sizes and a brushed finish with decals will give you a lightweight, comfortable frame, with a good-looking durable, easy to care for finish. In the even of a mishap, Ti is also easy to repair and the natural finish means repairs will be cosmetically non-issuess as well. Lightspeed still offers it's Taliani tandems on a special order basis..., but for the types of riding you are describing I would go with timeless, classic design offered by Seven. http://www.sevencycles.com/bikes/tandem.html
