This race happened April 8 in Puyallup, WA, but I don't think results have been posted yet - it was a small race, and I think at least some of the time recording may have been done manually which would reasonably take a bit longer.

The 400 yard swim was indoors, 2 people per lane in a 6 lane pool. Waves went off every 15 minutes starting at 7:30, and it would turn out that being in an early wave meant that you had a better chance of escaping more of the rain, which started somewhere around 8:30 or so. A very civilized swim, I thought, and I'm curious to see what my time was.

The 9 mile bike leg was outdoors so running out to get on the bike in damp 40-degree weather meant putting on some clothes first; for me that was a windblock jacket, a thin skullcap, and some gloves. There wasn't a lot of real straight or flat ground, but since the roads were dry for most of my bike leg negotiating the rolling hills and turns wasn't a problem. I thought the course had plenty of signs and flaggers to direct riders, although I did go off course near the end, which probably added 10 minutes or so to my time; I haven't downloaded the ride from my GPS/bike computer yet to see.

A bit past the top of the biggest hill on the course was an intersection and the proper thing to do was go straight, making it a short remaining ride to T2. I don't recall being explicitly directed to go right but that's what I did anyway, which had me go down a hill to a stoplight on Meridian Ave. This was a very long and steep hill, leading to several congested intersections and roads. I knew I was off course, but I knew only this one way back to the start from there so I took it.

Despite the extra distance and hills I felt unusually good on the almost completely flat 4K run, actually passing a few people along the way and finished strongly. By this time it was raining hard, but a few later wave folks were still going out on either the bike or the run.

Good job.....I am still waiting for racing to start here.....it was -2celcius yesterday, I literally froze both my feet on a 2 hour ride....

Well, still have 2 months until the racing starts here......bleh....I hate all you guys from the aouther states, getting to race almost all year round....mumble mumble.....

Good to hear your first race went well. Post when you find out your times. Will they post T times? I'm curious about the windbreaker. Did you feel warm enough during the race and did you pull it off for the run? My race is coming up on April 30th and the weather in Nebraska is often unpredictable. I'm planning on throwing on a singlet and long sleeve coolmax after the pool. The only think I know for sure is it will be WINDY.

Jaybird,
I found the jacket warm enough for the conditions I was in - temps in the 40s, damp, light rain, and no significant wind. I thought I might wear some tights for the last 2 legs but knowing it was a hilly course I chanced not wearing it for the bike (figuring the exertion would keep me warm) and found I was warm enough below the waist with just a 1-piece trisuit that went most of the way down to my knees.

Since the jacket had a full front zip, I decided to keep it on for the run since I could use the zipper to regulate how warm / cool I was.

Cool beans, Chris! How'd the swim feel with all that bilateral breathing going on!? Did you like how it helped you see the competition on BOTH sides? :)

Thanks, H2O. The bilateral part of the breathing is still a sometimes thing, although I can reproduce it if I focus on it. The twice-weekly coaching I'm getting has improved my knowledge of what to do quite a bit, but I just need to spend a lot more time in the water over the next few months to make many of the seemingly endless technique details I am currently consciously attending to a bit more automatic.

When I first started the bilateral breathing, I was still very new to swimming. This old lady came over to me and said, "Son, it looks like you are fighting the water." I replied, "Lady, I am 'cause its trying to kill me!!!" I'm w/Chris, bilateral breathing is still a "sometimes" thing for me, too.

You should do it, especially in a tri. It helps you stay stright.

I came home from my ride this morning to discover a plaque waiting for me; I got 3rd in my age group. The fellow that won was only a few minutes ahead so had I not gone off course I probably would have won my age group.

On the podium if the right folks don't show up,
Chris
