Bicycle Mechanics - Teaching

Hi all, any chance someone can teach me a bit more about bikes? I know the simple stuff (i think) i just want to get into it a bit more and if something goes wrong with my bike i would like to repair it myself instead of paying for it! Thanks alot...

yep, lots of people can.
On the internet, www.sheldonbrown.com is a bit of a bike guru, has lots and lots of useful information (lots of it non-standard info that you won't find anywhere else) and even pops in here to answer personal questions every couple of days.

The park tools website www.parktool.com has detailed, picture-filled guides for fixing just about everything on a bike.

In person, you usually have to pay. Lots of wrenches will give you one-on-one instruction for a price, just ask at your shop or post an ad. Alternatively, many shops and orgs offer free classes in bike repair (generally covering several weeks, 2 hours/week, one system at a time (brakes, shifters, hubs, etc.)) With bike-to-work month coming up, there are likely to be more resources like this now than any other time in the year. Depends on where you live, though.

I've taken two formal classes on bicycle maintenance, and several "informal" classes where fellow cyclists have offered to teach me how to do various things.

For the formal classes, check with:
-- your local university or college - they often put on a basic bicycle maintenance class on a day or two during the spring or summer. (that's where I took my first class)
-- your local community classes - you know the "leisure guides" most towns put out offering classes in pottery, yoga, beginner's French, etc. ... well sometimes they have a bicycle maintenance class too.
-- your LBS - sometimes they put on a class. In fact, in the previous place I lived, one LBS put on a course that was held once a week throughout the winter (10 or 12 weeks, I think) and got quite in-depth. I would have loved to take that one, but it didn't fit into my schedule then.
-- places like MEC and REI - they often have a whole series of classes on various sports and bicycle maintenance is one of them. (that's where I took my second class)
-- your local bicycle touring club - I've often seen those clubs offer a bicycle maintenance class, especially shortly before any of their bigger tours.
