Mountain Biking - Looking for a new fork - not sure what to go for

Right now im using the fork that comes on my norco bigfoot (marzocchi - not sure what model) and it just isnt up to snuff. I do alot of cross country and downhill so im not sure what kind of shock would be good for me. What would you guys recommend? Right now im really looking at the marzocchi 66 VF that jensen has on sale for $299 - will this suit my needs? I dont do any hard drops so im not really worried about strength. I lso probably dont want something thats too high since i do climb alot of hills. I just want something that will stay planted. My price range is around $400.

Well the 66VF is pretty damn tall from what I've heard although it's an excellent fork. Maybe get something like a Rockshox Pike that you can turn down to 95mm of travel for the uphill and 140mm for the downhill.

That was 04 or early 05. I believe Marz has reduced its height.

Yeah, Marzocchi reduced the 66 serie's height by about 35-40mm but only for 2006. The 66VF is 2005. ;) (the 2006 version of the VF would be the VF2).

That's a good idea, he could get the RLC 130 so he could lock it out for the climbs if needed to.

yah i just looked at the vanilla and it looks like the best bet. I mostly do xc but i also do downhill as well. Its a little bit over my price range but i think its the best bet. I have hayes disk brakes, will i have any problems hooking everything up?

I have a Marzocchi All Mountain 1, and ride the same type of terrain as you describe, it works awesome
