depends exactly on what yr looking for - XC, DH e.t.c? in terms of on your doorstep, your best bet would be to get a OS landranger map of your area. You will be able to see the bridleways and make up your own routes from your house.
There are mountain bike parks and man made trails driving distance away, but you may be lucky to find one on yr doorstep.

Look for byways (crosses on an OS) as well as bridleways; they're supposed to be open to all traffic, but many of them are so badly maintained that you wouldn't have a hope of getting a car or even a land rover down them. Some of them can be quite challenging as well.

This is one quite nice trail/track (http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?client=public&X=542500&Y=230000&width=700&height=400&gride=545544.547539222&gridn=229135.651573749&srec=0&coordsys=gb&db=freegaz&addr1=&addr2=&addr3=&pc=&advanced=&local=&localinfosel=&kw=&inmap=&table=&ovtype=&keepicon=true&zm=0&scale=50000&multimap.x=410&multimap.y=253) I use when I'm in the area between Furneux Pelham & Hartham Common, don't worry about the fact that it says Ford, I've ridden it at all times of the year and don't often get wet feet.
