Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I need to replace a carbon fork on my Trek road bike...LBS has a $40 charge to install after I buy..I need to save the $$$...can I install it myself?..or do I need special tools...I have an extensive Park toolkit...my Bicylce Magazine repair book does not have a section on this...

http://www.parktool.com/repair/readhowto.asp?id=111 has the info you'll need. You can hacksaw it, but you'll want a fine-toothed blade and ideally some sort of guide. If you freehand it, be careful...

You definitely need to have this done pro. However, if you know how to properly adjust a headset, you can do most of this yourself and only have the shop cut the crown race seat and install the crown race. They may grumble, but they should definitely charge you less since they don't have to mess with your bike, just the fork. $40 is pretty reasonable for a fork prep and install, though, so maybe they weren't even going to prep it.
I'm assuming your old fork is trashed, which means you don't have to worry about the truly tough part, which is pulling the crown race off without damaging the carbon. My mechanical guru won't even do this with the park tool, he only trusts the $$$ hozan version. However, you need to let them do this as well, as knocking if off with a hammer is a bad plan.

It's easy to do if you know what you are doing, but 40 bucks is pretty cheap cash to be sure you don't screw it up. A steerer cut too short makes an expensive wallhanger.

I am a wrench in an LBS. $40 is not a bad price. It ain't as easy as it looks. Let the pros do it. You cut that fork too short, or screw something up putting the crown race in and you are out $$$.
