Some folks can maintain 24mph and drink Pabst morning, day, and night. Beer does have carbs after all.

Drugstore.com has a special on CLIFF bars. These are my favorite, and at $10/case it comes out to about $.85 cents per bar. There's free shipping on orders over $25.

I found a bag full of Cliff bars while I was cleaning this morning. I was pretty happy to find them, since I'm not going to be bringing a lunch to work for the rest of the week...

Cliff Bars don't do well after a week kicking around a bag, I've found. But I bet most bars don't.

Target's usually got Clif Bars and regular Power Bars for under a buck. Check the nutrition aisle in the pharmacy section. I think I got a bunch for 94 cents a piece last time I was there.

yup, larabars are pretty sweet. there's another whole food bar out there, with like 2 or 3 ingredients.. can't remember what they're called. but they're awesome too.

Clif bars are the only energy bar that when I eat I think to myself "GOD DAMN THIS IS SO GOOD"

Also keep in mind I am usually starving and in the middle/finishing a long ride when I eat them.

+1 for Larabars. I'm pretty pleased that they're more widely available these days. Last summer, I had a organic farmer who had a shop out in Illinois somewhere and stocked them have him bring me a stash once every two weeks to the weekly Farmers Market. He was great.

But now I can get them at Trader Joe's or Whole Foods (though TJ's has all the flavours I don't like).

Clife bars are decent -- they've done me well on rides but a little too... thick. In the dead of summer, it's tough trying to keep that down.

i like the lara bars too, but they're on the pricy side (as measured by calories/$) and they're not that calorific per serving...

- went to Big Lots last week and found 24-box packs of raisins, apricots and dried cherries for $2.94 - bought three of 'em...

- ounce for ounce - go with dried apricots....

- power bar? phhht! make a PBJ and cut into quarters... i use Peter Pan's No Sugar Added Creamy and 12-grain loaf bread on sale...

The new-ish Cashew Cookie Larabar is amazing. I'm hooked. It may've supplanted the Apple Pie.

As far as Clif Bars and other more processed energy bars go, Consumer Reports did a study a few years ago and looked at what was on the market. Their pick for best overall energy bar, in terms of price, nutritional value, etc, was a Snickers.

Haven't tried the larabars yet, sometimes I have a cliffbar with PB on top. :p (eew). Bananas are good too, same way and it suits me fine. Or, in the summer I'll buy a bunch of nanas and peel and freeze 'em. Peel, put in a ziploc, and freeze. Tastes almost as good as ice cream. Well, ok, maybe not almost as good but still good.

BTW Larabars are $30/case at drugstore.com, cliffbars are $10/case. I was trying to point out that cliff bars cheap and good and shipping is free. Check the first thread mssg for the link, or just goto the web site. Shippng on larabars is free too. My hope is that if enough people keep ordering nutrition bars from them, they'll have incentive to keep prices low.

In NYC, most places charge $2/bar for a cliff bar. Black cherry almond is pretty damn good and it even has bits of choclit in it.

I like the taste of cliff bars, but I guess Im really cheap because its hard to justify the cost when I just did a double century with pbj and fruit and was fine. Whenever I get bars I end up eating them all real fast just because they're tasty.

Clif shots are definitely better while on the bike..they metabolize faster.

As for the snickers crap - I don't wanna deal with caramel or risk choking on a peanut while riding. Clif 4 lyfe

You can get the same amount of energy from gel as from a bar in 1/10th the time, so why not use them instead? I generally use one gel pack per hour on the bike, whether it be recreational moutain biking or balls out racing. Tooling around town obviously doesn't necessitate quick energy.

Edit: Sorry I didn't specify before, but this is for immediately before riding or during a ride that I use gel. I only eat bars if I'm in need of quick energy at the shop (while working) or during a cool down once I'm finished riding.

Choking on a peanut? Are you related to our prez... oh wait that was a pretzel.

Back to topic, any ride under 2 hours doesn't really require energy induction. But some of these bars are good with coffee and healthier than a snickers.

i find that after 2 hours i'm much happier with solid food in the mix; i start out w/ a gel at 1 hour, then every 45min after that, and throw a bar, banana, or boiled potato w/salt into the mix, and alternate between water and some 1/2 strength electrolyte drink.

after about 4 or 5 gels the taste starts to get to me too (and this is a guy who LIKES wild berry power bars)

Heh, when you really need one it doesn't matter. I found one at the bottom of my backpack in the middle of a 12 mile hike in nicaragua last year, and it was a lifesaver.

I tried one of these tonight. It's full of good stuff and tastes great, but the coating of chocolate would be a disaster while on the bike..way too melty. Good for before/after a ride though. Expensive too...but my girlfriend gets them wholesale.

I guess this is where my lack of long distance experience comes in. I haven't done too many rides of more than 2 hours where I brought adequate nutrition, so your advice of solid, slower metabolizing food is probably better than sucking down several gel packs. What's the advantage of putting salt on a boiled potato?

the salt helps prevent cramping (and it tastes good, especially after all the sweet stuff).

I got a coupon in the mail for a free bottle of Gatorade "endurance" and the ad says straight up "gatorade endurance has double the sodium" so I am saving it for a loooonnnggg ride.

Yeah I've heard your body likes it much more if it's diluted with water. Not sure exactly why though.

that's good stuff. i used it on my last half-marathon (instead of my usual gookenaide) and still felt fresh by the end. well, relatively fresh anyway.

between free shipping and a discount from an earlier order i got a real good deal. just last night i noticed that while i still have plenty o gu the solid ride fuel was starting to dwindle.

i usually take both gels and bars on long rides but i susally find i only really get a hankering for gels about half the time. solid food is usually where it's at for me.

one further tip: they say luna bars are for girls but i think that only because girls wouldn't eat the crap they serve to us men generally. LUNA BARS ROCK! i buy them whenever i can get them cheap. the chocolate covered cherry flavor tastes better than a snickers (which is my favorite candybar).

That said, I bring a minimum of 10 kcal/mi, and usually shoot for way more than that. It's usually some combination of the sports drink in the bulk section of Rainbow (http://www.rainbowgrocery.org), a PB&J or PB&Honey Sandwich, and Snickers, which you can usually find for like 3/$1, even in overpricey SF.

The PB is salted.

slightly off topic.....asparagus eat a **** load with a few meals for a few days....everytime i eat a lot i never feel fatigued. the rank smell of your own urine is worth it(not be gross but...)

Whatever floats your boat, I say. I find that on longer rides, I am eating a little bit pretty much continuously, unlike most other people I know.

Plus, DF, you're in much better shape than I am, especially because I think I've only put in ~1000 miles since January 1 with all this rain, as I hate riding wet. (Yes, even with full fenders, I just have no fun.) So I'm sure you know well what works for you.

But I agree about the peanut-butter filled pretzels; I just usually just forget that they are there.
