alright,
this is a really silly question.
but i'm gonna ask anyway.
when i see a puddle, river, or stream. I put the 'pedal to the metal' and attempt to drill thru it. half the time its deep, my wheel gets caught in some bundle of river rocks, and i end up gasping for air...figuratively speaking.
if i purchase a camelbak hydration pak. wont my mouthpiece get messed up/dirty with every fall on wet or dry terrain?? what do u do to prevent this.
right now, i use an oakley backpack w/ two 1 liter water bottles for my 2 hour trail rides.

Just wipe the dirt away. It wont get messed up. Prevent it getting dirty: dont fall off your bike.

huh? if you're worried about that, then why are you out doing an activity that you will get wet/dirty while pursuing?
wipe it off, or not. pull water through it, and if you feel something gritty, spit it out. it's not rocket science.
(or, if you're a totally anal namby-pamby type, you can carry some sort of antibacterial crap to clean it with. h3ll, the junk is being marketed and sold in everything these days. it's just dirt, people. sheesh. and people wonder why "super bacteria" are evolving more and more? )
apologies for the snotty answer, but it's late, and i'm tired, and i felt like giving it.
Wipe it off and forget about it. It's clean dirt.

don't drink out of it after it gets dirty. then throw it away when you get home and purchase a new one. it's better to risk dehydration than get some mud near your mouth.

Be sure to wash your hands before you touch the mouthpiece. You wouldnt want to make it worse.
wipe off any big chunks, but don't spend much time
then
take the mouthpiece with the remaining grit, stick it in your
mouth and take a big pull,
and also wipe it down with your tounge and mouth. spit that out
and do it one more time, clean it with your mouth and spit that
out.
then take a sip. it should take no more than 2 wasted sips to clean
so you don't waste needed water.

I like the "don't fall" theroy myself.
I like the "don't fall" theroy myself.
Works great in theory, but not so good in practice.
My $.02: Suck the dirt down. It's good for you.

Well if your really worried about it, just carry a couple of alcohol wipes in your pak, and wipe it down good. I can understand your concern, but even in my brief mbing timeframe now, Ive chewed grit almost every outing. I've even rode with a tourniquet on my leg. hehee.

You might want to watch out for Giardia as it is found in streams out west and gives you bad farts, greasey stools and the poops. Also, avoid having anal sex with beavers.....Ok i just got done with a micro test and thought this was fitting as Giardia is carried by beavers and found in streams/water, particullarly out West. I would worry about it.

Usually when falling of an elevated log ride I use my pak as an air bag to cusion the landing.;)

lol hilarious.
i ride too often to just suck it down. i dont want cancer or watever toxic substances in those rivers. but yeah, i guess just sucking it and spitting out the dirt water is the way to go, most efficient atleast.

I think there's two wasted steps in there and two wasted mouthfulls of water.
Stick it in your mouth, take a drink, and enjoy the grit - it adds flavor.

do you realize how much dirt you ate as a child....didn't hurt you then and it probably won't hurt u much now
Keith
i dont really care if my mouthpeice gets sandy/dirty. if it is really bad il 'gargle'(for lack of better words)real quick and spit it out.
Just stick the mouthpiece in your ear before the crossing...that way, at least you have one clean ear.

You might want to watch out for Giardia ...
I was going to mention that and even if you do swallow a few of the little guys there are pills that will kill 'em in a day or two.

Drink the mud. Get some iron in your diet :)

Actually, the bacteria in the mud might strengthen your immune system. However, I don’t recommend eating mud on purpose. I'm just saying don’t sweat it if a little mud gets on your mouthpiece. Just rinse off the excess mud and you'll be fine.

giardia lambia....
ewww
i dont want diarhea........ then again i ride with bottles.. tehy get coated with water and mud.. and i just drink it down... have never had a problem... doubt i ever will
suck it up... dont be a girl about it.. its dirt ... big whoop
While I agree that this is pretty much the weakest, most sissified question I've seen in a while, I do have a solution that isn't a joke. If it sincerely bothers you. Take a small plastic baggy (like a sandwich baggie or the like) and place it over the mouth piece, then take a rubber band around the tube to hold the baggy in place. That will keep your mouth piece 100% clean with no worries.
I do this on my hunting camelbak when transporting it inside my truck to keep water from leaking, but just as it keeps water in, it'll keep dirt out..

Is that what made you believe there's cancer in the rivers?
Stuff the mouthpiece down your collar.
Everyone gets muddy. I get excessively muddy. If you're concerned about the bacteria from the miniscule amount of mud you get on the mouthpiece, you need to consider running or chess.

Yes, +1 for oversized packs like the HAWG. In addition to water, it's a nice cushion on your back for when you get a little to aggressive on a steep hill.

For those with OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) Camelback makes a "bite valve cover". its's a sheath that sits between the tube and the bite valve and an attached friction sealing cover. These come stock with the "winter" packs as they are for keeping the thing from freezing in these applications. They also come with the "thermal control kits" which is an insulated tube with a black bite valve cover.

The water we drink is supplied by those cancer-filled rivers and the reservoirs they fill. I suggest you sell the bike and buy a bubble and some sanitary wipes.

Not in all cases, in some places wells do just fine.
The issue is that "wild water" typically has "critters" in it that you don't necessarily want to drink. It also has ground runoff which includes animal waste and whatever chemicals that have been discarded by modern society (albiet in totally harmless concentrations). You would not want to fill your Camelbak with river water. Our water is chemically treated before it goes into the tap and sewage is treated before it is returned to the river.
However, having your bite valve "splashed" by such water probably won't hurt anything besides the calm level of an OCD sufferer.

actually, you can get a cover for your bite valve. my camelbak bladder came with one and all my Deuter bags came with one. the Camelbak covers are about $5-7 and Deuter ones are about the same
I use a Dueter M3 insulated bag with a Camelbak Hotshot insulated, baffled bladder and a Source bite valve w/cover.
it is good to carry a first aid kit that includes alcohol pads or anti bacterial wipes but not just for wiping off mud. you havent ridden until you crash with a hydration pack on, especially in a creek or HUGE mud pit

And yet you somehow managed to survive for the probably 18-20 years leading up to your sudden knowledge about how dirty the world is. Seriously. Microbiology classes are the worst ****ing things ever. Everyone comes out of it with a germ complex now that they are suddenly aware of how many bacterium there are everywhere. Like they just suddenly appeared as soon as you took the class. The world goes from a mostly clean place to infection central...except you still have the same immune system that managed to let you survive up to that point. That's the part that everyone seems to forget.
Ok, my rant is done. :p
Just swish a mouthful of water around to clean the nozzle.

Well put.
I actually happen to be OCD. I use the Camelbak bite valve cover. The I use the Trojan Bite valve cover cover. Then I use the Zip-Lock Trojan cover. Then I use the Hefty Zip-lock cover. Followed by a nice slathering of vaseline intensive care. Then I dip that in a bit of Shake'n'bake and throw it in the oven at around 350 degrees or until golden brown.
Umm...just don't land with your bite valve in poo. It makes the water taste funny.

haha...horrible first post to make, but, seriously. Is a little dirt that big of a deal.
I race quads(MTB is my cross training)..and the whole front of your body will get caked in mud, including your camelback mouthpiece, and I just gulp the **** down....but, not as noticable when your traveling at 90 miles an hour or so...you have other things on your mind. lol
