I replaced the Ultegra 9 speed triple crank and 9 speed triple front derailler from my Lemond Zurich with an Ultegra 10 speed compact double crank and 9 speed double front derailler. I do not care about the extra gear and changed nothing else.
The bike shifts better. The ratios are better. Chaim slap is gone. The biggest change is that the crank/bracket/frame combo is much stiffer and more direct. I highly recommend the upgrade to the 10 speed crank.

The crank you speak of is not actually Ultegra, nor is it "10 speed" but I totally agree that the upgrade from octalink to hollowtechII BB units is well worth it.
How are you finding the smaller big ring (if you see what I mean!)?
I like the smaller big ring because (1) I can stay in it most of the time even on modest hills and (2) I am using rear gears that produce a better chainline. With my prior setup, I was frequently changing back and forth between the middle and large chainrings and then having to also shift the rear.
