Touring - What's an old 520 worth?

I have a 96 Trek 520 that I'm thinking about selling. This bike never did fit me so it has little use, maybe 1000 miles, none of it touring. The bike is stock, with two year old Conti Top Touring 2000 tires, the only blemish is some light hanger rash from being in a garage for ten years.

Any thoughts, what is this bike worth?

That just might fit me, and I'm looking. Any idea what the standover height is?

Not sure. I wasn't ready for specifics yet, still trying to get a handle on what the bike might be worth. I'll get into the garage tonite, make some notes,and post them tomorrow. The 23 inch is roughly equivilent to a 58cm frame size. It's one size down from the largest 520 frame size.

In my opinion the most important measurement is top tube length. Standover height only matters when your stopped and straddling the bike. Unfortunately, many shops use it not only as a primary fitting tool, but as their only fitting tool. In fact, on a standover basis this bike fits me perfectly. However, with my long torso it's too small length wise and was impossible to dial in with different stem/bar/seat combos. That would have been good to know before the check cleared. My solution was to hang the bike on a hook and continue to ride my older 520. I bought a new 25 inch 520 two years ago. By standover standards, the bike looks to be too big for me. Yet, while riding, it fits me perfectly.

From recent EBay auctions, I would think it would sell for anywhere from $450 to $800. My guess is about $600. A 96 Cannondale T700 I was watching sold for $415 yesterday, plus another $100 or so for boxing or shipping. A good 520 should be above that.

Probably around $500, maybe $600 max. At least out here west coast. I see newer ones in the 99-02 range going for a bit more - $600-800 and a lot of potential buyers who plan to tour will want a later model in the hope of maximizing reliability in the middle of nowhere. May or may not be valid, but that's the thought process. Does yours have the LX mtn crankset? - that is an advantage over later models for sure.

With the low miles on yours it should be good for many miles, hope you find a good buyer. I love my 1995 but use it mainly locally now for long day trips and occasional overnights. I would suggest Craigslist if you are near a metro area, and possibly post it on this site. I really don't like Ebay much although I have used it from time to time.

The bike has an RSX set, front and rear, including the STI shifters. The bike is as I bought it in 1996, box stock. Only upgrade is the tires, Conti Top Touring 2000.

My '98 cost me $550 on CL. It's near mint condition almost like it stayed in-doors. Fully racked and fendered with a Brooks B-17 and Nitto stem/bar.
