so i got my first explosive flat tire the other day.
funny situation as it may seem , i was riding along an all purpose concrete trail parallel to us1 and marvaling at the sensation of dropping congested traffic like nobodies business, i was watching myself go by slow traffic and the trail curved without noticed. i rode if the trail into rocks& debris and instinctually tried to make a hard maneuver back onto the trail straight up ramming both of my conti ultragatorskins into the edge of the concrete just about ripping right thru the tires..................oh no!
.so i get it fixed later , my friendly lbs mech put a plastic ppatch on the inside of the rear tire that had been slightly ripped thru , along with some new tubes and it seemed just fine.
so today i noticed the front tire has a bulge along the side right above the rim. is this a problem with my tires being damaged or hastily installed iner tube. my flat situation might have caused more tire damage than i anticipated
what to do ??
THANKS for all advice in advance

Change the tyre. Check that your brake pads are not rubbing against your tyre.

No brainer. Buy a new tire. $30 (or whatever) is a small price to pay to not have an explosive blowout in traffic. There are some things you shouldn't cheap out on, and tires and brakes are right up there.

If the bulge is where the damage is, your tire is toast. You might try reinstalling the tire to see if it wasn't just mounted improperly. Having said that, once you damage a tire so much that the inside is messed up, you'll wind up getting a lot more flats.
Whenever you have doubts about a tire, replace it. I know it's no fun to screw up new tires and be out a lot of $$, but surprise blowouts are too dangerous to mess around with.

the most apparent damage was on the rear tire on one spot. both tires have a bit of orange thready out a bit , the front tire has the bulge
surprise blowouts will probobly suck allot , and i dont wanna risk damaging my rims cus they are beautiful and bladed and black, so im on my slick mtb with toeclips till i can resolve this

All advice to replace that tire is good advice, and it goes double for being a front tire. A front blowout WILL put you down hard.

both my tires hit the edge of the trail pretty hard and blew out that instant , on the left side was the visible damage , for some reason the bulge is on the right side , im suspicious of the causation , the rear tire that actually has pierced damage with a plastic cover on the inside shows no sign of bulge or any out of trueality in the rim. i think i got off pretty lucky what with not having too much clipless shoe exp and being able to come to a relatively safe stop abruptly. it was totally my fault of not keeping my eyes on the road for that split second and for having the mtb reflex of trying to swerve back on , i suppose ill buy 2 new tires (gonna stick to the conti ultra gatorskins) and replace the front one while keeping concern on my rear wheel.
i only rode it the other day when i discovered the bulge, and have been on my pre-road bike slicked up toeclipper mtb till i resolve.
The people in this thread give good advice.
Just thought I'd mention, though, that sometimes a bulge in the tire is caused by a badly-seated tire (sometimes related to a badly-seated tube.) There's a chance that all you need to do to get rid of the bulge is carefully seat the tire, but if that doesn't do it (or if re-seating the tire only temporarily gets rid of the bulge) then the tire's not safe.

If it's a bulge just above the rim, it's probably a damaged bead, as Conti Ultra Gatorskins are "folding" (i.e., kevlar bead as opposed to a wire bead).
Conti Ultra Gatorskins are "folding"
Gatorskins come in folding and wire bead versions. I made the mistake of ordering one of each before without noticing until I got them.:o
