what is the difference between a new 2003 road bike and mine?

I'm riding a canondale with factory ultagra 9 speed, it just happens to be 5 years old.

What is the difference? honestly I have seen no new materials, weight reductions, wonder inventions or anything else in 5 years.

So why would a 2003 be one bit better than a 2, 3 4 year old bike in the same condition?...other than marketing hype?

Usaully they change some of the specs a little bit. Thats all I can say..

Well, it depends on what frame you got.If it'sa a caad3, the caad4 has hourglass seatstays for allegedly a better ride,caad4 gets integrated HS and a bit less weight,caad6 also has cdale porprietary bb end even less weight,caad 7 gets all that plus an new lighter alloy.

Caad 7 has different shaped tubes, uses a different alloy, and has a different geometry than the Caad 6/5.

The difference between the 5 and 7 is noticable and really makes it hard to imagine how they could improve it. It is a great frame.

My vote for a new (or at least re-visited) bike design is Pinarello's Dogma road bike. It uses Dedacciai’s new AK61 Magnesium tubeset. Pinarello has exclusive rights to AK61 until 2005. It features a corossion control treatment that is said to address a weakness of magnesium fabrication.
