Tonight the wife and I stepped into the tandem arena. We bought a used 20 year old:eek: for $80. It has not been used much at all, shiny rims and plenty of tread. We couldn't afford to step into the big league yet so this is a good starting point which I'm sure will lead to a very good quality tandem next year. Tonight we took it out breifly and instantly got the feel for it although my wife didn't like not being in control:D Tomorrow will be the maiden voyage;)

Anyway, just wanted to share my excitement.

2Wheeled, congratulations. I too recently entered tandeming with a good deal on an older tandem (although mine was almost twice the cost of yours at $150 <grin>). I am glad I was given the opportunity to try it without sinking a lot of money into it. I am not sure I ever would have tried it if forced to plunk down the big bucks just to see if I would like it. So it worked out for me and I sure hope it works out for you.

Tonight was the maiden voyage and boy did we have fun. As soon as we hopped on and got going the corners of my mouth were hooked on to my ears. We soon got into rhythm and started chugging along at an OK clip for us, probably 15mph average. We did a short 8 mile loop which was pretty flat with one little rise, boy, hard work, we're both not in that great of shape though, but more rides are will soon follow. The only negative side was that Lisa found the seat a little uncomfortable and now has sore butt, so this weekend I'm planning on getting one of those suspension stems and a better saddle (open to suggestions) before our next ride. She had a great time though despite the sore butt and we both got an equally good work out. Excellent stuff!

With all the $$ you saved on that used tandem, buy Lisa a good pair of cycling shorts . . .

Congratulations on your ride. It sounds like a great ride to me.

I just ordered the Brooks Champion Flyer http://www.wallbike.com/championflyer.html for my stoker. I will report how that goes.

Welcome to tandeming.

We started (two rides) on an $80 tandem. We love it. (Tandeming, the $80 tandem is being appreciated by someone else who we sold it to for $80.) Looking for another inexpensive tandem to add to our collection of 1 so far.

Saddles are very much a personal preference, but you should ride for a couple of weeks to get used to it before plunking down cash on new seat posts and saddles.

may I ? where I could posibly even look for a tandem at those prices. I have a friend moving to IN and he is much better than me but we like to ride together.

I really new to the Tandem World myself. However, my wife has me looking into THUDBUSTER.com
Well be doing our second ride this weekend and if it goes as well as the first, I assume we'll be purchasing one. I've been told they raise the height of the seat a bit so make sure you have some room.

I will be looking into a Cane Creek Thudbuster seatpost also and have found one on craiglist for $75. I think this will help the harsh ride for my stoker.

wonkemtel - I found my tandem on craiglist, it's not a high end machine but is in great condition for what it is and now have the joy of riding with my partner. Small budget this year, next year....hmmmm!

I put a thudbuster on my commuter when I first started riding all the time. After my but hardened up I found it was unnecessary and removed it. That being said, the design of that seatpost is good, and you have to go with what will float your boat.
