Mountain Biking - 17 inch Stumpjumper for 5 10.'?

Considering buying a used Stumpjumper and was wondering if a 17" frame is too small for someone 5 ft 10.5 to be exact. (183 lbs).

its good...not too small..anything bigger is too hard to handle..

i kno someone that is 6'3" and used a trek 19.5" and he found it WAYYY to big...(yes, the Geometry of trek and spec is diff but not tat much)...he then switch to a klein 17.5 M and its now perfect....

you should really be going into large frames 19< for hardtail frames if u are under 6'

I have a Stumpy 18" as of a few days and I'm nearly six feet. I find the bike fits me well for what I'm going to use it for, which is mainly commuting and the occasional single track when I get around to it (Hard to get out of London:mad: ). If I would have intended to use it for off road only, I probably would have gone for something a little bit smaller and adjusted the cockpit with seat and bars. Soo, I guess it depends on the intended use. Also bear in mind that size is not only a question of height, but of body geometry in general. It's therefore difficult to give any specific advice. Some people like their bikes big and some like them small. HTH!

At 5'11", I'm on a 17.5" Trek 8500. It's pretty much perfect.

5'8-9" on a 17 stumpy... perfect... with my back against the seat post there is about 2" between me and the top tube...

I'm 5'7" and just got a stumpy in a 17. I would have preferred like a 16 but they don't have one and the TT on the 15 was too small.

It really depends on your inseam (your weight doesn't matter at all!) I'm 5'11" and I ride a 19" Stumpjumper. A 17" would be too small for me. I'd feel too bunched up with that short of a top tube. But everyone is different. Go ride both sizes (three times if necessary) and think about the kind of riding that you are doing. Stumpies are supposed to be more agressive and stretched out. You don't want to feel like you are riding a cruiser but you also don't want to feel like you're Superman either.
