My new job here in Vancouver requires me to wear a certified bike helmet to keep all the crazed drivers' high insurance rates down in this beautiful town...
any suggestions? prices vs. aesthetics?
thanks in advance...
I'm pretty happy with my Cratoni Ceron...

I rock a Specialized Decibel. Got it on sale and it is the single most well-fitting, comfortable, and well-ventilated helmet I've ever had. Also looks cool as hell.
go for one of these. things look funny as hell with the visor.

Giro transit is a good cheapie that doesn't weigh much. Fits bigger heads better, tho. As for looks, I'll say a modified version of the same thing I say when people ***** about rock climbing helmets looking goofy: you're wearing board-soled velcro soccer cleats, your pants are rolled up to your knees and your socks or shins are covered in grease, you're wearing the oldest, most battered clothes you own, fingerless gloves that smell like a jock strap, a chain around your waist, and eyewear most people associate with metal workers or skydivers, and you think what's on your head is going to make you look goofy?

yes...i think helmets look goofy...and i'm ok about looking goofy...and the giro sounds like a good bet as some say i got a big head.

....woa.
edit: i'm not looking for a skater helmet...i wore those for too many years...riding the vertical U-pipes.
i want ventilation and lightness so it barely feels like i'm wearing one.

That's not actually true. They weren't certified in the US, and thus they were recalled, which is not the same thing as failing certification (just like not taking the SATs doesn't mean you're stupid...). However, they pass EU safety standards and are kosher in Canada (where I bought mine). I'm under the impression that the EU standards are actually higher than the US ones, but I could be wrong.

I really like my Rudy Project helmet a lot, the ventilation is great and it fits very well in every way. The buckle is unique so the tightness of the strap can be adjusted slightly w/o touching the strap, and there is a pad between the buckle and your chin. Also, the head tightener thing that is usually just on the back for most helmets goes all the way around your head.
But I think they may be pricy, I got mine cheap from a guy who bought it for his wife and she used it only a few times.
Plus Rudy is sexy.

No worries bloke.
I would be bloody shocked if you got stung by the cops for no lid = but who am I to talk :(
Skate lid all the way. Are helmets have a 'naff' element, but better safe than sorry.
Good luck!

I like the looks of that -- however a quick google search shows the helmet for the cheapest at around $120... the Atmos can be had for about $140 or less.

That's the first error you made. If you go to any store that stocks Trek accessories, you're bound to find it for no more than 95-100 (They're actually marked down to 89.95 at our store). Contrary to popular belief, the internet is not the best place for deals when you factor in selection, shipping, convenience, etc. Meanwhile, the MSRP of the Atmos still sits at $190.00. Did I mention the Anthem C is the EXACT SAME HELMET?

i'm going to look at helmets today, down at some of the local LBS's...thanks for all the suggestions! i like the giro eclipse, i wonder if it's too spendy for me though?

Well, apologies for checking the Trek Online Store itself which quotes a MSRP for $124.99. No need to get testy about it. I wanted to sincerely know -- I quite like the helmet.
I rode without a helmet for quite a while this winter and into early spring, but once it got warm enough to not be wearing a stocking cap all the time, I decided I might as well get a brain bucket. I've got a Giro Encinal now and it's very comfortable and well-ventilated. Fairly stylish as well at least as far as helmets go.

I think it was in the ballpark of $50 at one of the LBSs.

definitley not a skate helmet, but feels nice and tight once you've adjusted the myriad straps and plastic doo-hickey mechanisms, i think i'll always wear a cap underneath...

Ditto. I bought the same helmet in red and white last week. It fits infinitely better than the Bell Metro I was wearing all winter. And it's light too; feels like I'm wearing nothing at all, nothing at all, nothing at all...
