Hello all,
I just picked up a Dahon Mariner 6-spd folding bike for commuting to work. It's a good bike but it's got some funky "Huffy-grade" components on it and I want to upgrade. I am planning to change the brake levers and calipers to Shimano LX or XT. The problem is the rear derailleur; it's a Shimano SIS (shimano index shifter). LBS says it's "entry level" component but I call it crap as it's made of stamped sheet metal. Seems like the index shifter is not compatible with the derailleur as either the upper gears or lower gears don't engage properly regardless of the cable adjustment. Appears that there's not enough cable feed thru out the range. For now I just use gears 3 to 6 and stay out of 1 and 2. By the way, it's got a Falcon freewheel and that really limits upgrades. Any help is appreciated.....Thank you.
