I ride an ancient Motobecane Nomade II that I bought in 1972. Back then, most people thought touring bikes were weird looking. (Mountain bikes weren't around commercially.) It has been my transportation (except when I ride the subway), my escape and a good friend for years. I am thinking, however, of retiring her. 30+ pounds is pain to carry up and down the stoop steps. Or so my husband says. A co-worker just bought a tandem bike that's lighter than my Moto. Our favorite ride: down the Ocean Parkway bike path (the country's first in 1894) to Coney Island.
