I just purchased an Sun EZ-1 LWB and have rode 50 miles already. Now I am having some discomfort in my lower back, mainly a stiff achey feeling especially after getting out of bed in the morning. Would this be considered normal adjustment pain with new muscles being worked and weak ab muscles being strenghened.
I thought I was in good shape since I lift weights 4-5 days a week, but it is starting to feel like maybe some muscles we're being neglected. Thanks, Tskuller

I'm not sure what makes you think we bent riders can diagnose your back issues. Maybe its the bent, maybe its the weights, maybe its something else. I'd suggest seeking medical help instead. As for the EZ-1, you chose a very upright recumbent, but the fact it doesn't support the entire back as more reclined recumbents do may or may not have anything to do with what's going on with YOUR back.

My golden rules with bikes are:

- The only pain you should experience, if at all, is pain in your leg muscles, and they should be gone the next day, unless they're obvious cramps from lack of exercises.

- If you experience pain in your back, knees or any other joints, something's not right, so stop and solve the problem.

- You shouldn't get used to the bike, rather, the bike needs to suit you just right. This is especially true of recumbents, which are much more a question of personal fit than uprights. It's entirely possible that the seating position on your EZ-1 isn't right for you, depending on your weight or your age.

Just so you know, EZ-1s, BikeEs and the likes, which are in fact semi-seated recumbents, are more prone to give you lower back aches, recumbutt (which is a pain in the buttocks) and feet that go numb on long distances, because all your weight is concentrated on your bum. The problem is worsened if you're heavy. These days, I only keep my BikeE for short distances and to go around town for exactly that reason.

I have the same pain, once in awhile after riding my trike.....so I do some toe touching, bending over at the waist, after 8 times my back loosens up and I feel better and soon the pain is gone.
