Mountain Biking - cheap V-brakes?

I need some new brakes for my huffy. I cannot even lock the rear wheels with the current bottom of the line canti's. Does anyone know where I could get some cheap v-brakes+levers for under $10 bucks or so? My bike is a '98 rigid steel-framed beast w/ a 21 speed drivetrain, and I'm probably going to ride it 'till it breaks, then just throw it away. So, does anybody know where to get a cheap pair of V-brakes? Is there any considerations or conplications that I should think about before doing this? I don't want this to cost more then about $10 bucks

I think your pushing it to get brakes and levers for about ten bucks. Jensonusa has got Tektro V's for $5 each, and SRAM 7.0's for something like 7 or 8 each I think. The cheapest set of brakes and levers I saw was at pricepoint for around $35 for Shimano STX brakes and levers. Good luck!!

thanks, everybody. I know I'm pushing it, but I'm actually putting my money into my road bike...therefore, I dont really want to spend any money on the huffy. Plus, its a huffy...

I'd donate some to the cause if I could but I replace stuff as it breaks so I don't have any spares right now..:(

You should become friends with the mechanic at your LBS and ask if they have any in some "junk parts" bins that most bike shops keep.

As mentioned, you'll need some new levers if switching to linear pull (vee) brakes.

The cheaper route is to get some better canti's, people are giving them away! If they're set-up correctly, they'll stop almost as well as linear pull brakes.

I bought a couple of brand new sets for my beater bikes, the complete sets were cheaper than replacement brake pads. I think I paid like $4 each!

There is NO WAY that canti's could ever match linear pull V's. I don't care how well they're set up. The leverage just isn't there...

However, I do agree that some better canti's, set up properly, would work a whole lot better than what you're running now (especially if you can't even stop the bike...)

No no no you've got it all wrong! The best brake for a Huffy is a foot stuck inbetween the fork crown and the tire! sheesh!!! :D

Dooh, how could I forget that technique. Especially when barefoot!

I would go for the canti's, but I'de really like to lock the front wheel while moving. I've never ridden a bike with canti's that can do that reliably every time. My dad's hybrid though...

I might just jack them off of my dad's hybrid...I wonder if I'm good enough with an allen wrench to take them off and put them back on in 5 minutes...:D Just kidding...

I don't really think a cheap V-brake will last you weeks. Usually the poorly designed springs will let go and it will clamp onto one side of your rim. I once had to ride 10k to get home under such situation cus I did not have to tool to correct with me.

thats alright, I'm not going to wander too far from home. I'm probably just going to do a bit of trials-type of stuff, maybe some small drops.

After something breaks, the bike is history. I can then clear more space for a new bike.:D

I've got some Acera v-brakes (front and rear) and I can probably dig through a box of parts and find you some levers. What's your offer??? :D

fubar, that sounds good, thats pretty much what I'm looking for. I was hoping to keep it under $10 bucks though. I suppose 10 USD is my offer.
