Hello Vancouver area commuters.
I'm considering an alternate route for those nice days that will take me east from Vancouver along the Lougheed corridor and then turning south along the river to either the Patullo or round to the Queensborough. Problem is that I can't seem to find any route information for the section along the river and the connections at either end. I know there's meant to be a path along the river, is it good route?Any other advise? Thanks
Your looking to go east along lougheed all the way to poco then cut back following the river to the one of those bridges?
As far as I know there is no decent paths thru new west along the water, at least not between patullo and poco. There is a road close that goes past the casinos, and comes out around braid street. No idea how to get from braid to patullo though without going up and over the hill thru sapperton. If you find one, post it :)
Edit : as a side note, i seen a guy going opposite me across the queensborough one day that i coulda swore said 'marinoni' on the frame, so as i passed i yelled STEVE !, we both turned around....it wasnt a marinoni :P
Hi Jarery.
How do you get from the Queensborough to Coquitlam then? I'd like to take the river but I'm open to other suggestions, the main idea of this route is to be a relatively flat but longer alternative to going over the Kingsway ridge, which is my normal commute. I just know I'm not riding Brunette.
It won't have been me on the Marinoni lately, I destroyed a rim and only just picked up the rebuilt wheel this weekend.
I go along north road, thru saperton, then up to 7'th, and along it all the way to the bridge. North road has a lot of traffic, 7'th has almost none, but it wont save you from hills.

Theres the way i go.
I've not found a good route closer to the river avoiding the hills.
I dont know of a good route along Columbia & Stewerdson which would keep you closer to sea level.
Here's the first reply from the same question I posted on my club forum (Team Coastal)
"No nice route except up and over.
But isn't this a good thing?"
Guess I'm climbing or exploring some evening next week.
Hah !
Welcome to my daily hill climb :)
Ride along the river in Vancouver along Kent St. (From Ontario to Boundary). Then along North Fraser Way to Byrne Rd. After that, I think that you can continue east through the industrial park, or take your chances along Marine way (wide shoulders, but scary traffic), but my commute ends before Byrne.
Good luck, and let us know what works out!
A.

It looks like the map that Jarery made is about your best bet. I live in the Edmonds/Kingsway/Canada Way area and I am very familiar with the infamous New West Hills.....there ain't no way around them except over them...
What exact area of Vancouver are you coming from?

I'm coming from Broadway and Renfrew, but this isn't about directness, I'm looking to find alternate route for a longer ride that didn't go up and over that ridge for days when I want to do a different kind of ride. I've got plenty of routes that go up and over.
Hrm, can ya make it to knight street bridge and go thru to westminster highway, then over to arthur lang bridge without exerting up hills ? Might be able to add distance and stay flat by going south into richmond better than going east to burnaby/coquitlam.
Over knight, out to stevston, grab a salmon, head back to delta :)

Queensborough to Pattullo isn't hard - come out by the QB and cut up a couple of blocks to Eighth Ave or down to Sixth, straight out to Second Street, and down to Columbia with a short jag over at Royal. Alternately, take the bikepath that follows behind the bushes along Stewertson on the river side. It's there - you just have to look for it. It's part of the same bikepath that follows the Skytrain all the way from Vancouver.
I used to ride to Coquitlam fairly often from Surrey. My route was over the Pattullo to Columbia, follow Columbia to Brunette , down past Labatt's and out. 'Course, I do sometimes jam out and sidewalk it - safe enough with Labatt's closed and extra wide sidewalks along the old Pen lands, where the condo's are now.
Hey, Trickdog! I grew up at the corner of Sixth St and Eleventh Ave. Lived at KWay and Fifteenth for eight years and still hit the area for church. Small world, eh?

I've got a run I like that goes over the Knight St. bridge then along River road in Richmond, but I still need to climb over Kingsway (and the Alex Fraser). Could even extend that down to Steveston, use the shuttle through the tunnel and ride the flats north or south of the bog.
Guess it's coming down that if you want to ride around here, you climb somewhere.

I know the runs through New West well enough, I particularly like running across 8th, very fast west bound. Don't like the alleged cycle path by Stewardson, that was part of my first attempt at commuting, almost stopped me from commuting, especially where it takes two cycles of the lights to cross Stewardson.
You're braver than I am riding Brunette, that scares me in a car, but it would be fairly flat.
Thanks for the suggestions.
