113 degrees plus 10 degrees celsius in Florida this past June, climbed one of the few steep hills in Florida, that and I was done for today. That was also the last hill in Florida, I have climbed them all.

Hotter than Hell, Wichita Falls...as I finished the 50 miler the bank thermoter said 106.

1994 HHH finished the 100 miler temperature was 107....the asphalt was turning liquid and sticking to the tires.

God I love the south.

Can't stand the cold...won't ride if the temp drops below 50.

Somewhere around 110 with the heat index and new black asphault road. Actually, on that road it was probably more. I don't know why I got the bright idea to START riding for the very first time during that time of the year Der:confused:

Oh yeah..humidity... Dunno. I think it stays at 80-something-percent or more for most of the summer.

Sometime this past August, temps were 94-95, and humidity was about 90-95% with a "feels like" temp near 115, and no breeze. Rode for about 45 minutes and stopped because I was starting to get a Chill. When it's that hot and you're cold, there is a problem Houston! Had to stop and lay in the grass under the shade for about 15 minutes drinking the rest of my "warm" water.

Hit my local trails in 110 Degrees with a heat indecy of 114. (because of 93% humidity that day).

I went through 100oz's of water in under an hour.

I'll never forget that day........;)

I think my hottest (and probably dumbest ride) was when I went out at 11:00 am on a hot summer day (115 ish?) I rode 10 miles, stopped at a gas station bought a liter of water poured it on myself and finished another 10 miles :)

(no humidity here, but the hot dry air feels like a oven)

Hotter than Hell as 1Oldroadie said 106 at the bank,
but I think official temp was 107!

We shall see what the 2003 version has in store.

I'm so sad reading this...I miss hot weather:(

I was just thinking about the hot summer days and can't wait to have them back. I haven't been on my bike in about two+ weeks and it's breaking my heart. Ice & snow aren't motivating.

According to my bride, the heat index was 124 DEGF. My 17 mile commute home one August PM. I remember thinking that the water in my second bottle was almost too hot to drink. Spent the next half-hour assuring bride I was OK. :D

I does not get too hot here in Coastal California- at least very often.. Riding inland, I rarely go out if over 95 degrees.. Think can remember going out at 97 a few times.. That is my upper limit.

Believe it or not, it can get very hot in the summer in montreal, but not as hot as it does in the deep south or in Australia. This summer was very hot and we had days where it was about 34 or 35 C, that's the mid 90s, factor in humidity and it's over 100. One day in July I went late in the day when it was about 34C plus the humidity. People were out riding but no one was going very fast. I actually really love warm weather but on some days the air quality wasn't great so I stayed home!

47 Degrees C in December 1999. I will add at this point that the temperature itself does not tell the full story. If "official" temperature readings of here vs other places are any indication, Queensland humidity is worth an extra 10-15C, and it's there day and night.

Yeah, that's a problem. When it's humid, it's no cooler in the shade than in the sun.

Humidity and heat index's do not count! At sealevel water boils at 212F, not at 150 with a heat index of 212.

Dude, my only advice to yuo is to come over here and try riding in it. I have ridden in temperatures exceeding 100F without even breaking sweat in low-humidity areas. No chance of that when the humidity is high.

Oh yeah, and did I also mention this is the skin-cancer capital of the universe?

Yup, yup....I guess the hottest I have ridden in was about 110 degrees F, that hot even in my "100-acre woods" where my trails are. Most of the time when it gets THAT hot, though, I just go for a swim instead.

It was perfect weather in east Texas today...in the 60's and sunny. Days like this, I love this Texas weather!

heat index definitely counts I don't know what the heat index was but it was 98F beating off the cement and right back into my face felt like I was in an oven reading all those post on humidity I sure do not miss the midwest :)

On our rides from San Francisco to LA we've hit 110F/43C a couple of times. After 80 miles of that, hot Cytomax becomes more than a little nauseating, yuck.

12-17-02, 02:48 PM
98 degrees.... during a hot humid DC heat wave. It was probably 105+ on the blacktop though. 98 was the "in the shade" temp. We used up two liters of water in just 2 hours of riding. After that we were mostly in the shade and the sun started setting, so our water consumption went down. We were "bikepacking" along the C&O trail, so water wasn't exactly conveniently available.

The worst was not the heat, but actually the ozone-induced "lungburn" that we felt that night into the following morning. It was a feeling akin to asthma... lowered lung capacity, painful breathing, airway constriction, wheezing.

Yeah, that happened to a friend of ours, during the aforementioned heat and questionable air quality! HE got the bright idea to go for a long ride with a friend of his and spent the next two days coughing up his lungs.

Chris I wonder if perhaps Oz is the skin cancer capital of the world because of the ethnic makeup. A large amoung of Aussies (and Kiwis) are of welsh, irish, scottish and english descent- fair skinned! Even after all those generations living in that climate, you can't change your genetic makeup! Sometimes I wonder about that when I see Stuart O'Grady who's fair and freckly- he must have to shmear on the sunscreen like crazy.

Yeah, that's got a bit to do with it. I've got fair skin myself and I smear on the sunscreen even in the absolute dead of "winter". Even then, I've only ever found one brand of sunscreen that actually works for me. I reckon I've made that company pretty wealthy over the last 10 years or so.

Yeah, sure. The stuff is called "Banana Boat Ultra". Make sure you get the ultra-stuff though (the one in the black tube). The others aren't quite as potent.

12-18-02, 06:00 PM
Is that stuff any good? I see it at the drug store but I've never tried it. Is it greasy? Hawaiian Tropic is good but it's so GREASY. I usually use Coppertone with 45 SPF or Neutrogena which is also good but not greasy.

And what about all those Euros? Sometimes I see them in the Tour or the Vuelta, where it gets really warm, and I think of those fairskinned northern Europeans! Jan Ullrich is sort of redheaded and freckled, he must also have to shmear the stuff on!

I'm fortunate in that sense, I tan really well and am not given to burning, but I shmear the stuff on anyways, of course.

The Banana Boat lotion isn't particularly greasy, but it really stops the sunburn. I wouldn't advise using it if you are intending to get a tan though. It's way too strong to allow that to happen to most people.

I use the Banana Boat SPF50 (see avatar for amount of skin to cover) and am very happy with it. It's not greasy, but stands up to sweat nicely.

The problem I have with the sun is that I have a very high forehead and I have a well ventilated helmet. After riding in the sun I end up with tan markings that look like horns on my head. (No, I'm not the devil.)

By the way, the temperature outside now is 40 degrees C (104 F) and I'm about to get ready to ride 13.5km home.

On the subject of Sunscreen,
I like Bullfrog, I used it while diving so
it stands up to alot of water time.
On the bike doesn't get washed away with
the sweat, and therefore doesn't run into my eyes.
Its something like 36 spf.

It's freaking awesome today!!!!
The hottest I’ve ridden is 115 with the heat index and to those who say the humidity doesn’t make a difference your absolutely incorrect. The air is full of water so when you sweat it doesn’t have any place to go so it doesn’t evaporate and therefore you do not cool off.

wabbit
12-19-02, 06:42 PM
Oh, trust me humidity makes a difference. There are days when it can be very warm and it's great for a long ride, but you know that if it were humid it would be unbearable. However, when it's very dry you get really thirsty. And take lip balm no matter what! I slather it on when ever possible! I actually like humid, jungle weather but there are days when it's just unbearable.

As for Banana boat, I'll keep it in mind for next year, so if the drugstore is out of Coppertone then I have options. Getting a tan isn't a big concern with me, and I'd probably get one anyways. That's how I am. I also use a special sunscreen for my face by Biotherm- it's a bit more expensive but worth it.

I left home one morning and at sunrise it was 87. When I finally made it home it was 112! It was brutal. I even got a sunburn through my t shirt!

Although bike related, this is a dirt bike story, not bicycle. A couple years ago some of the area motocross tracks got together and had what they called the "Ironman Series". It started on friday night at one track, another on saturday night, and the third was midday sunday. I entered. Understand that the closest of these tracks was a 1 1/2 hour drive from home. I made the friday and saturday night races fine. I was pretty tired after the second night, got home about 2:00 AM. For the last race I had to leave home at 6:00 AM after getting in so late the night before. On top of that there was record heat, in fact at around 2:00 in the afternoon I heard on the radio that it was 116 degrees arrrgh!! I remember getting all my garb on- helmet, chest protector, gloves, jersey, and going to the starting gate. After about 2 laps I crashed hard in a berm, and of course the kindly fellow racers made sure I was covered in a huge dust cloud as they ripped around me lol. I remember getting up, trying to get my bike restarted, and thinking my God, this is the hottest I have ever been in my life!!! Needless to say most of the rest is a blur. I went back to the truck, drank about 6 gallons of gatorade, staggered up to the podium to get my well-deserved trophy, then came home and slept for about 16 hours straight. That was my last Ironman...

130 F. I was riding on the equator.

Just kidding.:D

Mine is kinda weak compared to some of the southern folk here, but here it is.

This summer, it was in the mid to upper 90s, with a heat index of 105. I rode a total of 15 flat miles and I was beat.

I prefer the cold.

Here in the Washington, DC area, summer peak temperatures of 100 F / 38 C are routine. However, since my commute is so short (about a half hour) it really is no problem. It is an odd sensation to feel the wind rush past and not be cooled by it.

Of course, the biggest problem with the heat around here is that often the nights are just as hot as the days. Coping with a really hot ride is much easier if you've had eight hours of sleep than if you've had five or less. Unfortunately, more often than not since the end of August, I've fallen into the latter category.

The hottest that I know of was the 104 that I almost had a heatstroke over. That was in early July, and the humidity had to be near 99%, especially near the Flint River.

But once, on the BRAG, down near Americus, GA, it was so hot my ears were ringing!

I did a partial commute in 116 and was really glad to get out of the heat (I was weariing work clothes). On Memorial day I decided to do a solo century and the temperature was around 104 when I finally finished. A kid at a park drinking fountain (near the end of the ride) looked at my bike' and said, wow, that's the kind of bike you can ride five miles! Thought it was funny (especially since I had just ridden through 3 cities around 30 miles apart!).

We've had a hot spell here recently: highs around 105F. Hottest part of the day is 5:30 or so, just in time for the commute home. But it's very dry here and if you drink well you'll be fine.

Wabbit, if you wonder, the hottest day in Montreal this was June 27th and the temperature was a few tenths shy of 34C with humidity of about 50%. I rode 125 km that day. People often overestimate the percentage of humidity in the summer because hot air can hold more water vapor. What kills me on hot days is not the heat, but the smog.
