hello

I signed up for this site a few weeks ago and haven't officially posted anything yet, so I thought I should start by introducing myself. I'm a girl who lives in center city philadelphia, and I ride a single speed. Basically my bike changes a lot, I find abandoned parts and bring them home, and rebuild new bikes from the parts. I like to encourage my bikeless friends to ride, and usually end up helping them build their own. I guess you could say it's my hobby. So I've signed up for this site because sometimes I need help and I always love to learn more about bikes. Its nice to be able to talk to so many other people who love bikes as much as i do.

Welcome. Many people are afraid to get into working on their own bikes. I am glad to see someone that just digs in. I also enjoy riding in the middle of Atlanta traffic and I find that rush hour maybe one of the safest times to ride. Ring the bell for me next time you ride by. It's been about 7-8 years since I have been up there. But even now I am starting to shake with desire for a cheesesteak.

Are you talking about the Liberty Bell? A few years ago they moved it and now it stands behind layers of bulletproof glass, and to get in to see it, you have to go though a metal detector and are carefully watched by security gaurds. Out on the street they have the sidewalk fenced off, and only allow a few pedestrians to pass by at a time. I think that ringing the bell for you is not an option, but i'll eat a cheesesteak instead. cheers.

I'd prefer my cheescake be from NY, but it's been decades since I've had a real steak and cheese sandwich. That's Philadelphia to me.

Welcome to the forums.:)

Things change - last time I was there you could ride your bike right up to the Liberty Bell. Sorry, you eating that cheesesteak for me isn't helping my lust for one. I usually start shaking almost uncontrollably about the time I reach Baltimore and usually have to duck off somewhere around 202 and route 30 just to satisfy that craving.

...a real steak and cheese sandwich. That's Philadelphia to me.....

Obviously, an out-of-towner, calling a cheesesteak a "steak and cheese sandwich." ;)

Jess,

You going to school in the city...? Or are you one of them working professionals. These forums are great. I still can't believe how much valuable info is on here. Nice people too.

What's your singlespeed look like, maybe I've seen you around.

yep i go to school in the center city . been livin here for 3 years and riding everyday for at least 2. (so in answer to cable's Q, i am none of the above. I ride in snow, wind, rain, whatever i have to, although i really hate the rain) i had been riding a blue single speed with modified handlebars and hot pink casings, compliments of the bike church, but about a month ago i got hit by a car right in front of the clothespin by city hall and destroyed the frame. now i ride a brown kia frame, everything else is still the same, modified handlebars and whatnot. i would really like to get a much nicer bike, but it just doesnt seem practical right now. i wouldnt want to ruin a nice bike because of another car. or have it stolen.

oh, and there is nothing better than a giant slice of lorenzo's pizza. i think i might ride out for one right now.

Funny, I was just about to recommend Neighborhood Bike Works, but it seems like you're already familiar with them. I also just finished eating dinner, and that cheesesteak is making me hungry again! Sometimes there's just no substitute for enough fat and cholesterol on a roll that you need to use scientific notation to measure it!;) Any way, welcome to the Forums!

Let me clean this up and just say "Darn it!!!" instead of the words I had planned. Cable43, why did you have to display that picture and Jess why did you have to mention a slice of Lorenzo's pizza? Being down here and Georgia and just dreaming about such things is enough of a hell already. But you guys gotta rub it in with pictures even.
