So... I'm watching Paris - Roubaix with the stoker and when they say there's an amateur section she gets excited about racing. So racing it will be, albeit not to P-R this week. But where are good tandem races in the USA??? I searched the forum for data on this but didn't find what I wanted. ON an unrelated note, I saw a tandem in Madrid this week where the captain had chopped off his seat altogether, removed the front cranksset, installed apehanger bars, and was riding single from teh stoker's seat. Must be that's what happens when the stoker complains too much.... I took a pictutre but don't know how to post to this site.

Burley used to have a stage race in the Northwest. I'm not sure they still run it. Co Motion is sponsoring a stage race in July http://www.co-motion.com/CCTandemRace.html I think that may be the successor to the Burley race. Even has a crit. Tandem crit racing, now there's a safe sport.

yea, right! A TT would be fine, as that's what I'm used to riding. Road racing would work, but no crits!!!!

great spectator sport though.

I think the crit is for singles, not tandems.

Thanks Tgeek. The Pa race in Aug looks like a good place to start..... I know some of the folks who went last year out of multisport.

No no no, guess again. :) :D There is also a half-bike crit run on the same course, but there is most most definitely a tandem crit, too:

Just east of San Francisco is the Pinole Team Time Trial, which includes a tandem category. Here are my pictures:

Same guy... not sure why he doesn't have them cross-linked anymore.

Hey, David... what's the deal? No links from your ASTRO Web site to the YahooGroups site?

Thanks folks. Some good choices.

Oh no, I guess it is time to maintain the website. A terrible thing to do when the weather is nice.

My avatar is a pic taken at the crit stage of the Miami Valley Stage Race in 1991 at Dayton, Ohio. I don't know if they still have the race or the tandem category, but it included a prologue, a TT. a crit and a road race. Good fun.

Most of the tandem racing that I'm familiar with around here (Vancouver, Canada) is on the track with blind stokers. We've got a male/male and a female/female team that trains on the 200-meter Burnaby Veldrome in between competing in paralympic events in Europe. Talk about g-forces... We had to reinforce the planks with plywood sheets underneath so the tandems wouldn't crash through the 45-degree bankings at 60 kmh. The most spectacular crashes on the track are done by tandems. I think that's why they stopped doing tandem sprints other than at blind sports. I remember seeing the 1978 Commonwealth Games tandem sprints in Edmonton. There were four tandems entered, and three of them crashed because the track wasn't banked enough for the speed they were going...

There is a Tandem catagory for the Race Across AMerica. Not quite what you meant right? If you are both liceinsed racers you can likely get into regional and State time-trials. You would likely be seeded after one of the other Catagories starts. IF there is at least one other tandem. See if some local racing team will work with you.
