I just bought a used Gary Fisher Cake 3 that has been used for 1 season and was upgraded with multiple aftermarket parts. I discovered some damage where the chainring gets close to the frame. The paint there is completely worn off to bare metal.

Is this something i should be worried about? Did the previous owner install the crankset wrong?

Is that some kind of chainstay protector on it?

Anyway, If I recall, the Cakes of your year had chainsuck issues and he could have installed it closer to avoid that. But yes, it's too close, obviously. They corrected the problem on my year (2005) and the gap is about 1/8 inch.
