Bicycle Mechanics - How to true the Mavic Elite wheels???

How does one true the Mavic Elite wheels and where does one get the unconventional spoke wrench which is required? The nipples apprear to be threaded into the rim.

Regular spoke wrench works fine. You will need to hold the blade of the spoke to keep it from twisting. Mavic makes a special tool (available at most shops and online), but you can do the job just as well with a pait of needlenose pliers. Nothing special in the truing operation.

Not the new ones. They require a splined spoke wrench. Also, using a needlenose plier on the bladed spoke is crappy advice. The spokes are aluminum and very prone to stress risers. Even a moderate scratch from a pair of pliers will make it very prone to popping.
Call up mavic, or go to your LBS for tools.

Good advice, except the spokes on Elites are stainess steel, not aluminum.

Yup, AL spoke are on the SSC/SL line. And to further that advice, a small rag wrapped around the jaws of the pliers is fine. Do I need to point out all the obvious things in life like flush after crapping, don't eat AA batteries and no radios in the bathtub??!!! Jeez........

I use smooth-jawed pliers; an adjustable wrench will work, too.

Go to WaltMart, buy a cheapo pair and a Sharpie. Write "MAVIC" on them and sell the suckers on eBay for $40! Yes, AAA batts can be eaten, yet only in moderation. Now show me a woman who can swallow a D battery and I'll be ready for a good time!

I would ask the LBS to true it for you without the proper tool - or ask to use it if you know them well!

I have heard that the spoke nipple is splined in order to obtain the high tension required for these wheels and a regular 4 sided nipple would just round off. Any comments?

Is the Mavic nipple threaded into the rim and the spoke threaded into the nipple???
