Is it ok to do this or is it better to use a shimano chain on shimano components. I just want to get the sram chain because of the convienient powerlink.

You can use SRAM powerlink on a shimano chain. I use it on my old bike that has 9speed. Haven't noticed any problems.

If you ask those who have tried it: Works, is cheaper, and more convenient.
If you ask Shimano: Does not work, will destroy your bike, will kill you.

I just upgraded a friend's GT bicycle drivetrain : original 8 speed cassette, Deore rear and front dereilers, Truvativ isoflow cranks and chain SRAM PC-48. So far, so good.
