Hi, have a problem with the new MTB I have just received.

For some reason, the stem is loose within the headset, which means that the handelbar wobbles back and forth. It is slight but definately noticable.

I am not sure if this is a small problem that just require a simple fix, or a reason enough to return the bike to the shop. I was thinking of wrapping some tape around the stem so there is more width and less moving room when the stem is in the headset. But is this advicable?

confused, any advice is appreciated.

The headset needs to be adjusted. It's a relatively simple fix but it's not a small problem and should be corrected soon.

If you aren't familiar with the procedure I'd take it back to the shop. You said it's a new bike so they should do the job correctly under their warranty.

Park Tools' web site describes the procedure if you want to see how it's done.

Yeah, I'd vote for a return to the bike shop for an adjustment over some tape around the stem.

Good luck, Eric.
