I just purchased a Benotto Modelo 800 from a pawn shop today. It is in really rough shape - rusty frame, rusted chain, "un-true" rims, broken cables, dried and cracked tires....it is really rough.
I have been searching pawn shops and thrift stores for inexpensive components for my first cyclo-cross bike, and was only interested in the drop bars, stem and brake levers off of this Benotto. As an added bonus the deraillers and crankset/pedals appear to be in decent shape (at least better than the ones I already had). I paid $25 for the bike and threw it in the back of my car with little regard for what I had just bought.
I am a real newbie, and until today really hadn't heard of Benotto. I actually thought the cut out heart on the underside was some sort of vandalism. I'm sure based on information posted in other threads, this bike is Mexican in its origin. There are several Italian components (brakes, handlebars), but it has Suntour deraillers and the signature cello handlebar tape. The brakes are Modolo Corsa, and based on info I found on Modolo, these weren't available on the market until 1982.
Is this bike worth keeping intact? I would hate to defile some treasured gem to create a beater bike.
