My wife has been feeling a pain in her side between some ribs while riding on the back of our tandem. It usually starts 10-20 miles out and can be excruciating, especially on longer rides.

The problem doesn’t occur on her road bike which she takes on long rides as well. I’ve checked the fit of both bikes, even photoshopping pictures of the bikes on top of each other to see any differences.

Anyone have some ideas? A couple thoughts of differences:

-The tandem has a suspension seat post. Is it possible that could be causing some pain?

-Another tandem rider thought she might be leaning to the right side to see around me. Perhaps she should try leaning towards the left side to see if that helps.

Unfortunately, she just gets frustrated with the pain and doesn’t want to change anything. I keep telling her that the pain won’t go away without doing something different

Suggestions are welcome!

If she is constantly leaning to look around captain, that *could* be part of her problem; could be putting strain on riibcage. Doesn't she trust her captain to do the right thing?
Also, does she have a suspension seatpost on the single too? Get rid of suspension seatpost on twicer to see if that alleviates the problem.
Sometimes these things are hard to isolate, but keep at it!

Same suggestion as when you brought this up last September (http://www.bikeforums.net/showpost.php?p=1576893&postcount=12)...

... change out the RockShox for a rigid post and see if that makes a difference.

I bet it's the peeking. On big downhills, I can always tell when my stoker sneaks a peek around me..... the tandem starts moving left all on it's own!

I ride as stoker and I always used to be looking over the pilots left shoulder. However- I raised his stem by 1" and can no longer see round him- or over him. Now ride without moving which does make for a more stable ride but I now get caught out when the sudden left turn comes up or the hard braking. Stable ride or enable the stoker to see whats happening- take your choice.
