Bicycle Mechanics - I finally went and did it...SRAM X.0

Went to the lbs and ordered the SRAM X.0 shifters and rear der today. Looking at the 3-spd shifter, there are 3 positive stops between each of the three gear markers - almost as if you'd be slipping the chain if you went to setting 1.2?

What gives with that? I mean if a 3-spd shifter can only run clean on 1, 2, or 3, then why are there the inbetween clicks?

Are they there to assist a gradual change up from small to big? And if so, who wants to do that?

Any explanations from the SRAM users?

With the advent of 9-speeds on a mt. bike cassette. There is often a bit of rubbing on the plates of the front derailleur. The "in-between" clicks allow you to fine tune your front derailleur to avoid any rubbing when the chain is in the extreme ends of the cassette.

So, a 3 speed front shifter actually has 5 clicks to it. A very nice feature and one you'll soon appreciate!

a2p. Another time I'd happily send them on, but a greater authority than any on this earth has spoken in clear, unambiguous language. Namely, my wife! She says that as she got the crap deal when we bought the bikes, I might as well gives hers my ex-XT/LX components.

Yeah, like it was already said but in Laymen terms. It's trying to be a friction shifter with indexing. The advantage to friction was the front derailleur never rubbed. Since indexing came out, this became a problem. Thanks to SRAM, this problem has been harnessed.
