Mountain Biking - Who here mtb's even during the winter?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hey, do you guys mountain bike even in the winter, at what point do you stop (if you do)? Do you use special equip.?:D
Me :)
But our winter gets down to the 20s at the very LOWEST, and it rarely ever snows. I just wear long sleeves and a beanie to keep my ears/head warm.

Not me. Not really possible although some do it. :)

Yup I do.
Tires with extreme grip and my balaclava.
Yes (in what passes as Winter here) As for special equipment? I don a mystical outfit known to the common man as sweats.
'tain't fashionable but I don't care.

Heck yeah, snow is fun to ride in.
Winter is no obstacle for me, but our winters are moderate. I actually enjoy this time of year more than the summer...except for hunting season, which requires some trails to be closed.

I ride! Note: Jim311, Raiyn and I all live in Florida, so our "Season" is just beginning.
If it gets cold (for us!) I usually wear a long sleeve jersey, and some BMX pants.(I bought 2 pair on closeout!). If I'm really cold, I'll wear my full face BMX helmet too. There are fewer vents in it and tends to be hotter than my Giro Exodus.

I just went for a snow ride yesterday. It was 32 F with about an inch of snow on the ground; perfect for traction. I dont see why so many people are scared of it, it's fun and there's nobody out there to bother you. The only time it really gets cold is going through an open field or a lake. If it was that cold all of the time i wouldnt ride but in the woods it's awesome. Just learn to ignore the toes and dress warm and it's fun.
By the way i live in SE michigan
Winter is irrelevant, seasons are irrelevant, resistance is futile.

Sure, I do it in winter; I'd love to have some snow to ride in, but I settle for mud.

My backyard borders The Beav... plenty of mud there. It's not the greatest set of trails in the world but it's right next door. I did a night ride a few nights ago and boy was it wet back there.
Here winter is the main mountain biking season. In the summer we have trouble keeping the trails cleared from the briers and bushes and stinkin' poison ivy. Some places are real bad about having ticks and snakes too. Most of us turn into roadies in the summer here.

Hey khuan, whats the Beav like? Im over from the Mill Creek area and theres nothing over here. Closest thing is St Edwards but thats boring. What kind of stuff is over there. Any built up stuff like ladders? And what are the trails themselves like as far as difficulty?

There's not much built up stuff. St. Eds actually has more. There's just some stream bridges and such. And the loops just go around and around and twist this way and that without much point but it has the advantage for me of being [1] close and [2] enough of a workout to avoid atrophy from setting in. It's not an exceptionally challenging trail but I like using it to introduce people to MTBing and it's a good place to take my bike on to check out new gear I've purchased or tuning changes I've made.

Winter is the best time! You can crash and it doesn't hurt!

I ride in the cold. It was interesting to ride on a trail that was frozen mud. I wear an Under Armor type shirt with a regular t-shirt, long sleeve T or sweat shirt, and a wind breaker. I then wear sweat pants with wind breaker pants. I like having warm close under with a wind shell on the outside.
The only time we dont ride is when its raining AND cold. We'll ride in the cold, and ride in the rain, just not both at the same time. Like others said, only special gear is to bundle up a bit.

Shorts and Tee Shirts ! It's nice out here this time of year. The ground is moist with no dust, and the weather is in the 50's. It's hard to believe we ride the same trails when its 60 degrees warmer in the summer:rolleyes:
I'd like to ride in the snow but there is just to darn much of it. I live in Lethbridge AB. Canada we have about 1 foot of snow and its -15 C. But other than that ill ride ne whaere in any condition you can think of. ALMOST!! heck i have gone in 6 inches of snow u just have to work a bit more thats all.
Have fun:D
