This week's Sports Illustrated names Lance Armstrong the Sportsman Of The Year. It has a great shot of him on the cover. The accompanying article is excellent. His resting pulse rate is 32! One time, when Lance was at a celebrity party, Tiger Woods came up to him (having never met him before) and blurted out "Lemme feel'em!" Lance then let Tiger feel his quadraceps. Tiger was in total awe! I tried to get this article on SI's web page. They show the cover, but they won't let you read it free. Rather than pop for $3.95, I went to my barber and conned him into letting me have his copy.
Did you know that most barbers get FREE unsolicited subscriptions to a lot of magazines? My barber gets dozens of great magazines every week for free, including three copies of Playboy. He told me he doesn't even open the Playboy -- he just throws it into his dumpster out back without cracking the cover.
(I snuck back there later and rummaged through the dumpster, but couldn't find any. I did find some pretty good used food, though!) :D

Yes, it ws great to see a cyclist get Sportsman of the Year. The only other time SI did that was for Greg LeMond. In both cases, it was for their triumphs in the Tour de France. Given that fact, it was very disappointing to me to see how the author, Rick Reilly, went out of his way to stir up anti-French feeling in the article. Lance may have his reasons to be at odds with the French government. However, Reilly managed to get some remarks from him about France and the French people that help me understand why some French fans are cool to him. I have never been able to understand the gratuitous anti-French attitudes shown in both the print and electronic media in the USA.

I remember that anecdote about TIger woods, and right after that the author says, "But he didn't ask to feel the scars in lance's skull from surgery, or the numerous scars from his collisions... " etc. SO over the top! And who would do that anyways? I can see asking to feel someone's bicep or quads who's going to ask, "hey can I feel the scars in your head?" or "gee, can you drop your pants so I can see where they cut off your nut?" And as for the other scars, the guy obviously doesn't know that every cyclist in the world has those, myself included!

However, apparently LA has been hit by cars six times!
