Does anybody know of things to do in or around South Padre Island, TX?

Take pictures? There's probably a pier there that you could go walk on and fish if you want, really pretty and stuff.
I think I went there once, but I don't remember if it was somewhere else.. last month we went to visit some family in TX and we went to Port Aransas for a while, there's a nice pier there and a ferry and stuff, and tourist places.

Sunbathe on the hood of your car by the ocean.

Find 50 caliber WWII bullets eroding out of the dunes behind the beach.

Watch out for tarballs when walking barefoot by the shore.

I grew up an hour from SPI in the Rio Grande Valley. On the island itself, on the far south end is Isla Blanca park--there's some long jettyies to walk out onto and catch some shots of dolphins and brown pelicans. There are piers on the laguna side of the island to walk out onto for fishing and picture taking. Wade fishing in the laguna will yield some speckled trout and redfish--just watch out for stingrays and Portugese Men of War (their bad this time of year). There are lots of dolphin watch tours as well as charter fishing. There's also a day cruise that for $50 you can head out past the international boundary. In Brownsville, you can go to the Gladys Porter Zoo. In Harlingen there's a great aviation museum. In Weslaco--my hometown--is a nature park and there's good shopping in McAllen. Matamoros, Nuevo Progresso and Reynosa are great border towns on the Mexican side of the border to do some shopping and sightseeing. Nuevo Progresso is the smallest town and easiest to navigate. If you want to do cycling, road is easy it's all flat, just lots of wind. On the MTB you've got to go all the way to Mission (1 1/2 hours inland). You can also go to the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge and also go to the Santa Ana NWR near Mission.

My Mom & Dad are winter texans. They're in LeFeria 4-6 mos out of the year. I was down there a year ago Feb. 05'. Hit Nuevo Progresso twice(got a beautiful mexican blanket) and flew in & out of the Harlingen airport

I got a Jaws t-shirt at the shop and thats me wading(not exactly wading, water a little chilly)

Theres also an exact replica(made from the original tooling) of the Iwo Jima Memorial right outside of the Harlingen airport.

And if you don't want to spend all your time on S. Padre, head back up to Corpus Christi proper. There's the U.S.S. Lexington. It's a dry docked aircraft carrier. Called the Museum by the Bay. Right across the street from it is the Texas State Aquarium. If you're on Padre when the weather is really warm, there's
Schlitterbahn @ Laguna Madre. It's a water park.

South Padre is a big spring break spot, so that should tell you something....

What DieselDan said, and add find a taquiria to eat at. Menudo is good for the hangovers. Try some tacos with barbacoa, or lingua. Its good eating.

If the swells are up... rent a board and try your hand at surfing. Yes there is surfing in Texas. Just remember if someone is already riding a wave... DON'T drop in. Wait for the next vacant wave.

Edit: If you want a cheap beer that is good, I'd suggest Lone Star Beer. A six pack of tall boy cans should be got for 5 bucks.

Yeah so its tongue. If prepared correctly, its some of the most tenderest meat you could ever eat. "Don't knock it, til you try it". Amazed you didn't PSA on Barbacoa either. Still great eating!!!

Forgot to add in my previous post. If someone walks in with an small igloo and yells out "Tamales"... you gotta try em out. Usually the choices are pork or chicken. If you can't handle spicy foods, stick with the mild. And another PSA - You don't eat the corn husk the tamale is wrapped in.

Trust me on the lengua, its good if prepared right. I feel bad for making you jones for the good stuff. If you ever find yourself heading down to Austin or Houston... well let me know. First round of tamales and Lone Star is on me.

I'll be in Port A June 22 weekend for a guy's debaucherous weekend playing washers on the beach (redneck horseshoes for those of you outside Texas) and working the cougars at Sharkey's. No riding ... bikes, that is harharharhar

I second that Lengua is absolutely awesome if prepared right. Also, tacos de tripa and tacos de chicharrones are excellent. If you can get some trompo, I'd go for that too. And the Menudo suggestion from earlier--yeah, the stuff is great, just don't ask what it's made of.

As for the idea of tongue and other organs, get over it if it grosses you out. Heart is as good as a tender steak and stomach lining is quite tasty. I've travelled the world and have eaten all sorts of bugs, organs (pig uterus was an especially interesting one), collagulated blood, cooked vegetables soaked in raw, fresh chicken blood, etc. None of it has ever made me sick. In fact, the only time I've gotten sick was when I had some salsa made with bad water near Monterrey Mexico.

I'll third Lengua! A couple of Mexican restaurants in Portland offer beef and/or buffalo lengua dishes as specials, one of my favorites!

As I got Superdex jonesing for barbacoa and Lone Star.... You got my wanting a nice thick Bison Burger. Glad I already went to lunch. Thanks to this thread I know what I'm eating for dinner for the next couple of nights.

okay okay, I was just being clear in the event one of our dear BF members goes to have some and is grossed out post-meal. I didn't want it to be some Rocky Mountain Oyster joke. I haven't had lengua (or tripe), but I'm not grossed out by it, just haven't had it :)

But now I'm hungry for some TexMex!!
