I found the following on my club's website (Southern Bicycle League) today. Looks good. Better than Bicycling. Guess I'll have to subscribe.

Dear Cycling Enthusiast,

We are writing to let you know about Asphalt, a new lifestyle magazine for the dedicated road cyclist. We would GREATLY appreciate it if you would pass this email on to your club members.

Founded by long-time cycling writer Patrick Brady and cycling enthusiast Lorraine Daly, Asphalt is a magazine for the cyclist that dreams about riding while at work, researches each bike purchase, is looking for the perfect fit, and thinks all vacations include a bike. Each issue of Asphalt features great riding (both in the U.S. and abroad), fascinating people, in-depth bike reviews, and thoughtful looks at the cycling life.

Asphalt's contributors include highly-regarded cycling writers Maynard Hershon, J.P. Partland and Owen Mulholland.

Published quarterly, Asphalt is perfect bound and printed on heavy-weight, glossy paper--the type of quality befitting the world‚s finest road bikes, destinations and riders. The first issue contains 84 pages, 79 of which are devoted to editorial content.

The first issue of Asphalt will be available in January 2003. Asphalt is a reader-supported publication and is available directly from the publisher and through select bike shops, but will not be available on news stands. Subscriptions for one year (4 issues) are $34.95 and individual copies are $9.95.

Go to http://www.asphaltmag.com to see some excerpts from the first issue, or contact the publisher at: info@asphaltmag.com.

THANK YOU for your consideration.

Keep riding,
Patrick Brady and Lorraine Daly Publishers

Hmm I wonder if they need a Photographer to contribute some stuff.. the web site looks interesting.. I may have to pick up a copy... Sounds a little like Surfer's journal... which has all reader submitted pics and stories... and is about $10 per issue... but the qulity is waaaay up there for a magazine...

It is pricey but that's because there is no advertising. That is probably a good thing- I think I'll give it a try.

The only problem I see with non commercial
zines is that they are somewhat limited by
the lack of advertizing income.
I took a dive magazine for a while, no advertizing,
did little or no review of gear but had great trip
reports and industry news.
I also subscribed to Listener mag a now defunct
audio mag by Art Dudley, what they did is
not allow advertizers to influence at all. All items
for review were purchased by the reviewer (at least
for first few years). Stuff got BAD reviews, if they didn't
like it, they said so. They folded when publisher
pulled the plug, not due to $ woes.
I think an indie mag can work if it is done with
"Ethics" and leave out the sound bite writing style.
I think there are enough cyclists out there clamouring
for this stuff to make it work.
