Foo - Saturday nite at my house...

Last nite, my house was full of teenaged boys. My 17 year-old had a bunch of his friends over for a Halo tournament. They were still going strong when I went to bed in the wee hours of this morning. When I got up at 7:30 or so, they were camped out all over the place.

I opened my refrigerator and found that they had gone through about 36 cold drinks that were in there last nite, that all my left-overs were gone (not necessarily a bad thing), every piece of lunch meat had been eaten, and every carrot and pickle was missing. When I opened my freezer, I noticed that the two pizzas that had been in there yesterday were gone. On opening my cabinets, I saw that all chips, bread, and cookies were gone. No more cereal, no more milk...DAMN! Is this what is meant by being "eaten out of house and home"?? But you know what? I don't mind a bit!

My son will be graduating from high school at the end of next month, and he is my baby. Both of my other kids have been gone a long time, one living in Dallas with his family and the other living in Sugarland with her family. When Eric leaves and goes to college, I am sure going to miss him and his friends with their huge appetites and their Halo tournaments!!

I'm old enough to have a 17 year old, but young enough (at heart & actual) to want to play in a Halo tournament.

My son's only 6, so I wont know about an empty nest for quite some time...

Heh. My parents are / went through that. Now only one of their son's stays at home and he is now either working or in his room on the computer.

Its great that you let all his friends hangout. And eat you out of house & home;)

Heh it's kind of weird because kids used to move out when they were much older, years ago, and then we went thorugh the stage where kids were moving out at the age of 15/16 and now we seem to be going back to kids moving out when they're 22-25.
I moved out when I was 17 but one of my brothers didnt move out till he was 22 or 23 I think and it was only because my parents moved and left him

My parents moved out when I was 19. Completely backwards.

im moving out this summer (right after turning 19)
my parents are doing well with both kids being gone (this being my first year at college and my brother - 21 - has had his own place since he was 19 with his gf)
they've gotten back to each other and seem to really enjoy themselves which i think is the best way to handle empty nest.

I hear you Mrsvicki, Im in the same boat. 2 teanagers girls over here, I always have a house full of kids, they love coming here and they do eat everything in sight. It makes it a busy house but Im happy that I know where they are and what they are doing and when those girls laugh they make me laugh as well. I dont remember my mom doing this for us, I swaer she told you to go play outside and locked the door till it was supper time! I like the idea that they can be comfy at my house.

Halo and Socom are in the same category :p They're just 1/4 of a step above WOW and the other RPG games that geeks find so addicting.

No no, WOW is a crackrock of it's own kind.

HALO, SOCOM, DooM, etc are all another total variant of crack.

As is starcraft, C&C, or any of the other RTS games.

I've been that kid....difference was instead of network games, it was advanced dungeons and dragons...and we had the joy of having Chris, the easily enraged DM over....so there was plenty of soda on my bedroom walls towards the end of the night due to me making him go off into a rampage....well as much rampage as a 5ft tall 90lb guy can attempt to pull off.

Well, actually, when I went into his room Saturday nite, I saw several TVs and x-boxes playing Halo2, Oblivion, Call of Duty2, and Guild Wars.

Yeah, but MMOs (massively multiplayer online) are massive timesinks, designed to tie you up for hours at a time.

RTS (real time strategy) can eat up a fair amount of time in a single setting, but is designed around player skill, so that they can play just one sitting a week and not be far behind compared to everyone else.

FPS (first person shooter) is pretty short rounds, and perfect for quick games. There are some exceptions, like the Battlefield series, where rounds can be pretty long... but still are shorter than the other two options. I'm a big fan of FPS games, and have been since DWANGO, the grandaddy of multiplayer game systems came out...that was around 1995.

Yeah, it's all potential time wasters....all about moderation.

...oh and one more category....rpg...role playing game....imagine advanced dungeons and dragons, but on the computer, and no dice rolling. Can be very short sessions, or incredibly long, depending on how the player chooses it to be.

That's why I play SOCOM, because I can play one game (11, 2-3 minute rounds at the most), and be done with it.

RPG's and MMO's are for people who are, like, never gonna have sex. :p

RPGs are fine for those who have sex....MMOs aren't though.

Thing is, you can always pause an RPG and go live life....an MMO just keeps going, so leaving for anyt reason is not good.

I think Oblivion has been on pause at least 4/5ths of the time it's been running. Great game...just has sooo much content that it's mind-boggling.

This weekend Eric and his fiance and some of his friends are going to a club for his birthday celebration. He will be legal. So my house will be empty. :(

Maybe I will go pick up my grandson for the weekend. (Shane can beat them all at Halo and various other video games, and he is only 5!) I think my daughter needs a break this weekend....yeah, that's the ticket!

Not usually at my house, he doesn't. I keep him too busy to play video games - we play t-ball and soccer and basketball and go hiking and swim! His parents let him play, although they do not own a Halo game (I guess that is a good thing).

Sometimes if Shane is visiting and his Uncle Eric babysits, they sneak a game of Halo in, I think.
